Renowned actor Morgan Freeman has blasted Black History Month, asserting that black history is an essential part of American history and should not be confined to a single month.
The interview, which took place over the weekend, covered a range of topics, including Freeman’s past projects such as the Civil War series “The Gray House,” reports the Daily Wire.
Freeman did not mince words when it came to his feelings about Black History Month. “I detest it. The mere idea of it,” he stated.
“You are going to give me the shortest month in a year? And you are going to celebrate ‘my’ history?! This whole idea makes my teeth itch. It’s not right,” he continued.
The actor’s critique of Black History Month stems from his belief that black history is an integral part of the larger American historical narrative.
“My history is American history,” he explained. “It’s the one thing in this world I am interested in, beyond making money, having a good time and getting enough sleep.” “If you don’t know your past, if you don’t remember it, you are bound to repeat it,” he later added.
“Do you know this song? ‘To everything, there is a season.’ It really, really works in show business. You are trying to sell something 15 years ago and nobody even looks at you. Then they go: ‘Didn’t you have a project, some time ago? Do you still have it?’ Life is like that, in this industry. You have got something you think is important, but trying to convince others is the difficult part.” This is not the first time Freeman has voiced his opposition to Black History Month.
In previous interviews, he has described the concept as an “insult” and questioned the use of the term “African-American” to describe black individuals in the United States.
“I don’t subscribe to that title. Black people have had different titles all the way back to the N-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African American.’”
“What does it really mean? Most Black people in this part of the world are mongrels. And you say Africa as if it’s a country when it’s a continent, like Europe.”
“I don’t subscribe to that title,” Freeman said last year. “Black people have had different titles all the way back to the n-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip, but everyone uses ‘African-American.’ What does it really mean?”
Black History Month has gained prominence alongside the Black Lives Matter movement, which was founded in 2013, gained increased prominence and attention in 2020 following the death of George Floyd.
Floyd’s death sparked nationwide riots, with some of these protests turning violent, resulting in significant property damage estimated in the billions of dollars, as well as the loss of dozens of lives.
