Despite Democrat rhetoric to the contrary, former President Donald Trump’s plan to deport illegal immigrants if he is re-elected has some broad-based support among voters.
A recent CBS News/YouGov poll seems to confirm that a national mass deportation program is something that a majority of registered voters support, including demographics that generally lean in Democrats’ favor.
“Would you favor or oppose the U.S. government starting a new national program to deport all undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S. illegally?” asked the poll of registered voters conducted June 5-7, 2024.
While 38% of those surveyed were opposed to such a plan, a plurality of 62% of Americans support the idea that Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, has touted as part of his re-election campaign.
Perhaps more telling is that 53 percent of Hispanics polled said they would “favor” deporting illegal immigrants while 47 percent said they would oppose such a plan. In addition, 67 percent of white respondents were in favor of the plan while 47 percent of black voters surveyed were in favor.
Mass deportation is now popular.

Women and those with at least a four-year college degree also favored a deportation plan, by 58 percent, according to the poll which surveyed 1,615 registered voters and had a margin of error of 3.8 points.
The polling is “reflective of just how dissatisfied American voters are with the failure of both Republicans and Democrats to secure the border,” Associate Professor of Political Science Thomas Gift told Newsweek.
“Immigration is again surging to the top of the ‘most important problem’ list because Washington has shown itself completely ill-equipped to execute common-sense immigration enforcement,” the director of the Centre on U.S. Politics at University College London, U.K., added.

Trump has indicated that the massive undertaking of deporting millions in the U.S. illegally would require help from the National Guard.
“If I thought things were getting out of control, I would have no problem using the military, per se,” he told Time magazine in April. “We have to have safety in our country. We have to have law and order in our country. And whichever gets us there, but I think the National Guard will do the job.”
And his idea has plenty of support, including from Hispanics who are increasingly coming over to the Trump camp.
“If you ask Hispanic voters, who do they trust more on border security and immigration? Overwhelmingly, they trust Donald Trump more, by a tremendous margin,” CNN data analyst Harry Enten marveled back in March.
“Look at that: 49% to 24%. And that is in line with what we’re seeing in the polls in general amongst Hispanics, right?” he continued. “Joe Biden won them overwhelmingly back in 2020 and won by over 20 percentage points. Democrats normally carry them overwhelmingly. If you look at the polling right now, in an average of polling amongst Hispanic voters, who did they choose in the ballot test? It’s barely Biden, Biden by about two points.”
