Retirement for President Joe Biden could be decided well before Election Day according to what one GOP lawmaker is “hearing on Capitol Hill.”

The Democratic National Convention, slated to begin Aug. 19 in Chicago, Illinois, remained little more than two months out as the first scheduled debate between the incumbent and former President Donald Trump drew to within two weeks. As many believed the latter could result in the former marking another parallel to the last Chicago DNC in 1968, Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R) added credence to the potential of a brokered convention.
Appearing on Fox News’ “Jesse Watters Primetime” with the eponymous host, the freshman lawmaker pivoted off of praise for Trump to relay rumblings that Biden would be cast aside by his own party prior to November.
“[Trump] understands that world leaders respect him and right now, with currently what’s coming out of the White House, you know, a lot of people realize that Joe Biden’s likely not going to be the nominee — which is from what we’re hearing on Capitol Hill, Jesse,” explained Luna.
Fleshing out that likelihood, the congresswoman indicated that Vice President Kamala Harris wouldn’t get the nod as, “You know, Representative Kiley (R-CA) had reported that Kamala Harris [is] actually eying a run for California governor because of it.”
“Right,” reacted a nonplussed Watters who went on, “That’s the backup plan. So, you are hearing also in D.C. that Joe Biden isn’t gonna be the Democrat nominee?”
“Correct. It appears that our colleagues are trying to put guardrails on a 2024 presidential election with President Trump,” argued the Florida lawmaker. “And also what you’re seeing is, according to our polling, you know, Jesse, as well as I do, that they’ve been trying to really paint Republicans as anti-woman, and they’re trying to push an abortion crisis right now with the election.”
“And I don’t think that that’s the case,” she offered. “A lot of the American people know that really this is a states’ rights decision. And so I think that they know that they’re losing. It’s very evident at this point.”
While many people had believed Biden would have burned out our outlived his usefulness far earlier in his administration, talk of his declining state has increased ahead of the debate, marking that event as a likely make or break moment for his candidacy.
A rival candidate, third-party challenger Cornel West, had previously drawn a connection to the 1968 race when he’d told Politico in December, “I’m not even sure whether I’ll be running against Biden.”
“Biden — I think he’s going to have an LBJ moment [and] pull back,” added the White House hopeful regarding the decision that led to South Dakota Sen. George McGovern securing the nomination over Minnesota Sen. Eugene McCarthy and Vice President Hubert Humphrey.
Meanwhile in April, HBO’s Bill Maher had reflected on the civil unrest wrought by Hamas sympathizers and contended that a similar situation to how “Nixon won the White House,” after “there [were] hippies in the streets and the cops were beating the sh*t out of them,” could unfold for Trump.
