On Saturday, President Joe Biden launched a new, anti-gun advertisement, in the same week that the Supreme Court repealed a ban on bump stocks and his son, Hunter, was convicted on felony gun charges.
The 30-second advertisement reiterates Biden’s support for gun control, accusing former President Trump of being in the pockets of the NRA.
“When Trump was president — children gunned down in classrooms, innocent people killed in church and massacred at a concert,” the ad began, with a number of voices speaking, before Biden chimed in, “Still, Trump did nothing.”
“He sided with the NRA, but I sided with you. I’ve expanded background checks, created an office of gun violence prevention, and now murder rates are down. You and your family deserve to be safe and I’m going to fight like hell to see to it that you are,” he said, pointing to the camera.
Just one day prior to the release of the ad, the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) had overstepped its authority by classifying weapons with bump stocks as illegal machine guns.
The ban was instated in the wake of a mass shooting in Las Vegas in 2017, during which 60 people were killed and hundreds were injured after the shooter, Stephen Paddock, used a rifle equipped with a bump stock to fire on crowds of people attending the Route 91 Harvest festival from his 32nd-floor room at the Mandalay Bay hotel.
The ban was initially instated by former President Trump, but has been the subject of several legal challenges, and was finally completely rescinded by the Supreme Court on Friday.
Biden, meanwhile, called on Congress to “ban bump stocks, pass an assault weapon ban, and take additional action to save lives. Send a bill to my desk. I will sign it immediately.”
The ad also comes after Biden’s son Hunter was convicted on three felony gun charges on Tuesday, after his purchase and ownership of a firearm while addicted to crack cocaine.
RTM previously reported that prosecutors successfully demonstrated that Biden falsified information on a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives form when he purchased a 38 Colt Special Revolver, along with a speedloader and cartridges.
“We are naturally disappointed by today’s verdict,” said Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell. “We respect the jury process, and as we have done throughout this case, we will continue to vigorously pursue all the legal challenges available to Hunter. Through all he has been through in his recovery, including this trial, Hunter has felt grateful for and blessed by the love and support of his family.”
Hunter Biden himself also addressed the outcome: “I am more grateful today for the love and support I experienced this last week from Melissa, my family, my friends, and my community than I am disappointed by the outcome. Recovery is possible by the grace of God, and I am blessed to experience that gift one day at a time.”
