After much anticipation, former President Donald Trump will finally have his chance to debate President Joe Biden. Unfortunately, it’s on the Biden campaign’s terms.
The debate, which will be held on June 27, will take place in Atlanta and hosted on CNN. There are some demands that the Biden campaign made before accepting the invitation. One of the most questionable is that there will be no audience present.
The only other people allowed in the room during the debate will be moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash. While each candidate will have two minutes to respond to questions, both will be prohibited from conversing with their advisers during commercial breaks.
“The debates should be conducted for the benefit of the American voters, watching on television and at home — not as entertainment for an in-person audience with raucous or disruptive partisans and donors, who consume valuable debate time with noisy spectacles of approval or jeering,” the Biden campaign wrote. “As was the case with the original televised debates in 1960, a television studio with just the candidates and moderators is a better, more cost-efficient way to proceed: focused solely on the interests of voters.”
Many are speculating that this demand was made because the Biden campaign knows that the president is in a mental decline and cannot hold his own unless in a more controlled environment.
Another stipulation is that the debate will be one-on-one, without any third-party candidates able to participate. With former Democrat turned Independent Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. gaining voters, the Biden campaign knows that he is a potential threat to the president being re-elected.
During the debate, microphones will be muted once their time is up to prevent a repeat of the 2020 presidential debates, according to the Biden campaign.
As a last resort power move, the Biden campaign also requested that the debates be hosted by certain news outlets, including CNN, CBS, and ABC. Ironically, conservative news networks such as FOX News are excluded.
According to Trump, there was also a demand that both candidates sit down during the debate, which he refused to do. The 78-year-old has shown he is more than capable of meeting the physical demands needed of a president.
Despite the special treatment, Trump is more than prepared to go toe to toe with Biden and agreed to all terms.
Trump has been looking forward to debating Biden for quite some time, calling out his opponent on several occasions.
“I’m trying to get him to debate,” he said at an April rally in Wisconsin, pointing to an empty podium. “I’m calling on ‘Crooked Joe’ to debate anytime, anyplace. We’ll do it anyway you want, Joe.”
While the debates will be different compared to previous years, there is no doubt that both candidates will be at a loss for words. Biden will probably target Trump on being found guilty of 34 felony counts, while Trump will target Hunter Biden’s guilty verdict.
With the debate being less than two weeks away, both candidates are prepping for what could be the most-watched debate in recent years.
There will be at least one more debate on Sept. 10.
