Three men – suspected to be acting in the interests of Russian agents – have been arrested after a vehicle dropped off five coffins adorned with the words “the French soldiers of Ukraine” near the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Knewz.com has learned that following the arrests, prosecutors have referred to the incident as a psychological attack and called for the suspects to be charged with premeditated violence.
The individuals implicated in the act are a Bulgarian, a German, and a Ukrainian who claim that they were each paid €400 (the equivalent of $430), two of whom (a 16-year-old Ukrainian and a 25-year-old German) were arrested on a long distance bus traveling from Paris to Berlin.
They were all released from custody on Monday, June 3.
The incident follows reports that the French government was planning on sending military operators to Ukraine to train the defending country’s troops “on the ground.”
A May 30 report by Reuters quoted a source from the French government saying: “The arrangements are very advanced and we could expect something next week.”
As a nod to the latter, the Ukrainian minister of defense reportedly claimed that the project was tabled in February 2024 already and has been an ongoing project since.
According to the French news publication, Le Monde, Macron plans on taking it a step further by forming a coalition of countries willing to train Volodymyr Zelensky’s forces.
These developments have triggered a reaction from Russia.
As if in protest of the country’s involvement, a video of a French mercenary being captured by a Russian soldier surfaced.
In the footage, the individual was depicted pleading for his life as his Russian captor terrorized him with gunfire. Adorned with French markings the gun-for-hire can be heard saying “Ne tirez pas” [do not shoot]
The Russian holding the rifle responded with: “Throw your weapons away!” To which the mercenary can be heard responding: “Ne tirez pas, je suis Français!” [Don’t shoot, I am French].
His captor-to-be responds by firing his rifle again and barks “Get out!”
“Vous pouvez m’échanger!” [You can exchange me!] the fighter pleads before the video cuts off.
Russian news agency, RIA Novosti indicated that Vladimir Putin also addressed the topic of France sending troops to Ukraine while speaking to the press during a visit to Uzbekistan.
He said: “I don’t think that [Western troops in Ukraine] is a good and correct decision and a good way out. This is escalation and another step towards a serious conflict in Europe and a global conflict. Do they need this?”
Macron has also openly advocated the use of Western-donated weapons in Ukraine. During a joint press address with Germany’s Chancellor, Olaf Scholz.
“How can we explain to Ukraine that they need to protect their cities . . . but that they don’t have the right to attack where the missiles are coming from?”
“It’s as if we were telling them we’re giving you arms but you cannot use them to defend yourself,” Knewz.com quoted him saying.
