Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance emerged as the top choice in a poll conducted among attendees at Turning Point Action’s (TPUSA) People’s Convention in Detroit.
The speculation over Trump’s vice-presidential pick reached a fever pitch as grassroots activists voiced their preferences during the three-day gathering.
Insiders have revealed that Trump has narrowed his choices to Vance, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, and Sens. Tim Scott and Marco Rubio.
1,986 attendees were surveyed by Big Data Poll at TPUSA’s event, with 43 percent favoring Vance over his competitors.
Scott followed at a distant 15.4 percent, Rubio at 7.7 percent and Burgum at seven percent, Daily Mail reported.
Speaking on Vance being the favorable VP choice amongst those surveyed, TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk told Daily Mail: “He has consistently been one of President Trump’s most capable and articulate defenders and surrogates and he speaks right to the Midwest Americans who attended our Detroit conference.”
“These are precisely the blue wall voters we need to win in November to reclaim the White House. His message and appeal clearly resonates with this critical voting bloc.”
The outlet reported that Vance’s rise began with his 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which shed light on poverty and addiction in Appalachia.
The book eventually became a key text for understanding Trump’s appeal in forgotten parts of America, per Daily Mail.
Vance endorsed Trump early for the 2024 race, despite his initial criticism of the former president in the past.
Vance addressed a question about a VP’s role in advancing Trump’s agenda during the convention’s closing session, emphasizing loyalty without commenting on his own prospects.
“We need to have people who are supporting Trump not trying to stab him in the back. It’s very, very simple,” he said.
There has been a lot of speculation for who Trump’s vice president will be, with various arguments circulating in support of each candidate.
Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary revealed his choice last week, arguing that Burgum is the “dark horse” that would be the best stabilizing influence on the former president.
“If you’re an independent and you’re thinking that Trump is too crazy, but then you’ve got Burgum in the package, then you’ve got some ‘Trump insurance,’” he explained.
“He’s so steady and so straight with a real track record.”
“So you get the bombastic Trump and then you get the Burgum Trump insurance. A little Ying and a little Yang.”
“Usually nobody cares about the vice president in terms of how it affects policy,” the Shark Tank star said, adding, “’But what is unique to this election is that it is becoming important because of the longevity issues around both these presidential candidates.”
“Then energy security is up there and border security is up there.”
“That’s another thing with Burgum, Trump could ask him to fix these issues and he could actually go execute it and figure it out.”
Trump also spoke at the TPUSA event over the weekend, highlighting what he would do to combat the Biden administration’s push for electric vehicles and botched Southern Border.
“First day in office we’re gonna drill baby drill,” Trump declared, promising to bring back gas vehicles and efficient cars.
He discussed the Biden administration’s environmental and green initiatives that have caused significant increases to gas and oil prices, footage captured by Resist the Mainstream’s Darian Douraghy showed.
Trump also reiterated his promise to solve the border crisis, promising to conduct the “largest deportation operation in American history.”
