A baseball administrator from Milwaukie, Oregon, traveled from the United States to England intent upon rendering the services of an assassin-for-hire.
Knewz.com has learned that 44-year-old Aimee Betro, conspiring with a disgruntled father and son, would have succeeded in her plan if her handgun had not malfunctioned.
The climax of this drama unfolded in September 2019, when Betro, disguised in a hijab, walked up to her target, Sikander Ali.
Ali had just driven into the residential area of Acocks Green, Birmingham, 100 miles outside London.
“As she left the Mercedes,” prosecuting attorney Kevin Hegarty said during the court case on Monday, June 10, “she left the driver’s door open.”
“She walked quite calmly towards Sikander Ali and was pointing a gun at him at head height,” per The Telegraph.
“As she got closer to Sikander Ali he saw her and he saw the gun and she pulled the trigger to fire the gun at him.”
Ali lived to tell the tale because the murder weapon-to-be jammed. Betro was forced to abort her mission, climbed back into her getaway vehicle, and fled the area.
The American was acting under the orders of father and son, Mohammed Aslam, 56, and Mohammed Nazir, 30— both of whom have since been found guilty of conspiracy to murder.
Their motive was a grudge they harbored from an incident that saw the display windows of their clothing boutique smashed and the interior wrecked.
During the fracas, the convicted father and son were injured and they blamed the Ali family for the assault.
After the failed assassination, Betro made one more attempt. She drove past her quarry’s house, fired three shots at it, and sent a message to her primary target, Aslat Mahamud (Ali’s father).
Said message read: “Stop playing hide and seek. Where are you hiding?”
“You want to rip me off, you want to be a drugs kingpin go look at your house. I will show you. Watch your back. I will be shedding blood soon.”
According to the report by the Telegraph, Mahamud’s reply was: “What are you talking about? I’m a family man, I have never sold drugs in my life.”
Betro fled the country two days later and was visited by Nazir. When he returned to England the following month he was arrested.
As the British police probed the plot, it became clear that Betro had sent her England-based co-conspirators firearms from Illinois.
The latter resulted in additional charges of illegally importing firearms being brought against Aslam and Nazir.
Matt Marston, from West Midlands Police, said: “Aslam and Nazir were determined to take revenge following a fall out where they were injured.”
“The lengths they went to in trying to make sure they weren’t implicated in pulling the trigger are immense.”
“However, thanks to some great police work and support from our Derbyshire colleagues, we were able to place them firmly in the middle of the attempted murder plot.”
The duo will be sentenced on August 9, while Betro remains at large, per Birmingham Live.
