The Trump campaign recently stepped up the vetting of potential running mates and one name in particular could be the undoing of President Joe Biden’s re-election bid.
Former President Donald Trump is narrowing the choices for his vice president and recent moves have been reported in his campaign requesting documents from several contenders, notably North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, and Sen. JD Vance of Ohio.

Insiders told Fox News that one of those potential running mates strikes “fear” in Democrats, pointing to Rubio as the one choice that “could spell the end for Biden.”
“Rubio is a familiar face who has become one of the strongest voices in the Senate for the America First agenda, is excellent on TV, and can blast Biden effectively for his failed policies,” one top GOP strategist told Fox News Digital.
The Florida senator has been a staunch supporter of Trump even though he ran against him in the contentious 2016 Republican presidential primaries. Trump is likely to announce his VP choice just before or during the Republican National Convention, which begins on July 15 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
“Trump is doing very well with Latino voters and the addition of Rubio would only strengthen that, which could spell the end for Biden,” sources told Fox News, saying “Rubio would be a solid, safe pick, with a lot of upside.”

The Cuban American senator from Miami was described as “an effective, disciplined communicator who rarely makes mistakes” by Republican strategist Matt Wolking, who noted that Rubio’s ability to speak Spanish would benefit the Trump campaign in its outreach to Hispanic voters.
“While demonstrating his ability to win a slightly higher percentage of white voters in 2022 than Trump did in Florida in 2020, he also appeals to the suburban and Independent voters that will be key to Trump’s success, and is the only contender from a true battleground state,” said Wolking, who was deputy communications director for Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign.
“Trump would balance out his ticket by picking Rubio for VP, which cannot be said for some of the other options. These reasons are why many Democrats fear the selection of Rubio the most,” he added.
Also “valuable” for Trump is Rubio’s tenure on the Senate Intelligence Committee which could help a re-elected Trump “reign in rogue agencies.”
Another source close to Trump’s campaign told Fox News that there are some “troubling” aspects of a Rubio pick.
“I’m not sure he’s a 100% Trump guy. That’s the one thing I would say, that he has not always been enthusiastic about Trump. I think that’s the one area I would find could be a little troubling to the Trump faithful. That might be an issue,” the source said.
“The other thing is the question of whether Rubio is the right person to carry the Republican colors in 2028 and beyond,” the source said. “I think he’s a good man. Don’t get me wrong. I think he’s been a great senator, and been very effective. I think he would be a more than adequate vice president, but it just gives me pause to think about him as a potential candidate, and whether he’s a Trump-faithful follower.”
But for Wolking, who believes Rubio tends “to be more hawkish than Trump when it comes to foreign policy,” the other concerns were not “particularly big ones.”
He also did not worry about Rubio and Trump both residing in Florida as some have pointed out this would be an issue since the Constitution’s 12th Amendment prohibits electors from voting for a president and vice president who live in the same state.
“That would likely prove to be more a speedbump than a real obstacle to putting him on the ticket,” Wolking said.
Fox News noted that other names have also been named as contenders for Trump’s VP pick, including House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Sanders, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott.
