The attorney who represented E. Jean Carroll, the author who successfully sued former President Donald Trump, twice, for a mountain of cash in a stunning set of judgments, is on a new case.
According to Newsweek, attorney Roberta Kaplan is now representing the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in a lawsuit filed against the outfit by the Trucking Association of New York.
Famous Trump enemy and New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) was also listed as a defendant in the case.
The lawsuit was filed against the transit authority regarding its congestion pricing framework, which charges truckers significantly more than passenger vehicles.
On behalf of the MTA, Kaplan informed the court that the expected implementation of the new congestion pricing framework has been indefinitely delayed by NY Gov. Kathy Hochul (D).
That means the lawsuit will likely not continue as planned.
“We no longer anticipate implementation of the Program on the prior expected implementation date of June 30, 2024. We will keep the Court apprised of any further information as it develops,” Kaplan wrote in a court filing.
The lawsuit was filed by the state’s trucking association on May 30. In the suit, the organization asked that the judge find the new pricing framework unconstitutional and sought an injunction to keep it from going into effect.
Newsweek described what the new pricing structure would look like:
Under the MTA’s framework, passenger vehicles with an E-ZPass would be charged $15 to enter the Congestion Relief Zone during peak hours. A truck, however, would have to pay between $24 and $36 during those hours, depending on whether it was a single-unit or multiunit truck.
Gov. Hochul finally intervened at the last minute and recognized that the pricing was too expensive for “everyday New Yorkers” and pulled the plug on the scheme, at least for now.
“I understand the financial pressures you’re facing,” Hochul said in a pretaped address last week. “I cannot add another burden.”
Kaplan became a national figure last year as Trump battled Carroll in court on two seperate occassions.
Newsweek noted:
The attorney has made national headlines for representing Carroll in her civil lawsuits against Trump. In May 2023, Carroll was awarded $5 million in damages by a jury after jurors found that Trump was liable for sexually abusing and defaming the columnist. She was awarded an additional $83.3 million by a separate jury in a second defamation trial against Trump.
There’s no indication whether or not officials will attempt to rework the new pricing structure, or suspend it indefinitely.
