The families of Sandy Hook victims defamed by Alex Jones received good news Friday after a bankruptcy judge in Texas ordered the right-wing conspiracy theorist to begin liquidating his personal assets while a decision is still forthcoming on the future of his media company, Infowars.
As Law&Crime previously reported, Jones owes the families a staggering $1.5 billion for the incessant and yearslong false claims he made about the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012. Jones had falsely claimed the tragedy was a hoax or part of a false flag operation and further, that the victims were “crisis actors.” As families of 26 people who were killed were still reeling, Jones promoted his conspiracy theories unabashedly through his media platform InfoWars and elsewhere.
Texas Bankruptcy Court Judge Christopher Lopez has not yet ruled on whether Jones will be forced to hand over total control of his Infowars platform and its parent company, Free Speech Systems, but this decision paves the way toward that end. The families urged Lopez earlier this month to begin forcing the sale of his assets after his public remarks about his bankruptcy case led them to believe he had no intent to pay them.Â
CNN reported that before Jones went into court on Friday, he told reporters that “this is probably the end of Infowars here very, very soon.”
According to Lopez, Jones will be allowed to sell off his gun collection, a cryogenic chamber and his Texas ranch, which is worth an estimated $2.8 million. He will be allowed to keep another home in Austin, Texas, and a handful of other exempted personal items.
Records indicate Jones has $9 million in assets, whereas Free Speech Systems has a little over $7 million in assets.
Jones and Free Speech Systems filed for bankruptcy in 2022 after the victims’ families won a judgment of over $1.4 billion when he faced legal proceedings in Connecticut. Jones lost another lawsuit brought against him in Texas by the victims’ families and that cost him $49 million. The parties were unable to reach a settlement, which forced the families to pursue liquidation.
The right-wing bloviator has asked his followers to download his video archives in case Infowars goes under.
He has continued to hawk dietary supplements and other products on his show and at previous bankruptcy hearings, assessors estimated that in April alone Jones’ media company pulled in more than $3 million in sales.
The families also wish to seize Jones’ social media accounts, including the one on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, that CEO Elon Musk reinstated for Jones last winter. Jones’ account has more than 2 million followers and the families argue that by seizing it, they will be able to stop him from using it to promote new business ventures.
