A heartwarming incident reminds us that there are still good news stories amid all the crises. Recently, two police officers in Alexandria, Virginia, demonstrated exceptional courage and quick thinking that saved the life of a newborn baby.
The Alexandria Police Department (APD) shared the heroic actions of Officers Hiltz and Reilly on social media. According to the APD’s June 10 Facebook post, a frantic 9-1-1 call led the officers to an apartment on Executive Avenue where a newborn baby was not breathing and had no heartbeat.
Upon arrival, Officer Hiltz immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the infant while Officer Reilly worked to calm the distressed family. After two rounds of CPR, the officers detected a pulse, and the baby started to cry, a sound that brought immense relief to everyone present.
The mother and her baby, named Luis IV, were reported to be in good health following the incident. After a brief stay in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Baby Luis was able to return home with his family.
Reflecting on the event, Officer Hiltz shared, “My entire focus was on making sure baby Luis was going to be okay. It felt amazing to hear him cry. In that moment all the stress and fear of the situation just left me.” Hiltz, who has served with the APD for over four years, expressed his gratitude for being able to help the family, saying, “It’s this kind of call, getting to help baby Luis and his family, that makes this job so rewarding and worth it.”
The APD highlighted that the officers’ quick actions were instrumental in saving Baby Luis’s life. Both the EMS Lieutenant on the scene and the emergency room doctor commended Officers Hiltz and Reilly for their outstanding service.
This story is a powerful reminder that, despite the challenges our nation faces, there are countless individuals who dedicate their lives to making a positive difference. The bravery and dedication of Officers Hiltz and Reilly are a testament to the good that still exists in our society.
