YouTuber and commentator Benny Johnson has filmed the interior of San Francisco’s Ghost Mall and claims that its current state is due to “wokeness”.
Knewz.com has learned Westfield Mall in downtown San Francisco is now empty and as a result of the mass departure of businesses, the property’s value has dropped by $1 billion.
“This is what happens when your city goes woke [and] when your city prioritizes criminals over peaceful citizens,” Johnson said in a recently released YouTube video.
Known for his anti-left rhetoric, Johnson called the complex a monument of the “failures of [San Francisco].”
He continued to say that only 25% percent of the building is in use by retailers while the complex’s foot traffic halved in the last two years.
As a nod to this statement, San Francisco Gate released a report on Feb 29, 2024, naming Hollister, Madewell, Adidas, Lucky Brand, and Aldo as stores that closed their doors over the past months.
Johnson, in his video, blamed drugs, crime, homeless people, and filth as direct reasons for “America’s creepiest abandoned mall that is still functioning,” and claimed that it makes fine dining and clothing shopping impossible.
His tour of the complex took him past an abandoned movie theater and showed bare bar counters and empty restaurants with the entrances to the actual theaters sealed.
The next stop on his itinerary was the food court but upon arrival, the same theme of emptiness and abandonment prevailed.
“Right, this food court is super depressing man, and some big-name brands [like] Panda Express ….. Man, [if] your Panda Express can’t survive you got problems. It’s like so sad they must have just gone out of business…” Johnson lamented.
He walked past a Pink Pink Tea Shoppe outlet and pointed to the empty shelves in one of their refrigerators saying “Things have gotten so bad here, they don’t even restock the […] soda.”
Looking through the floor void from behind a railing, Johnson pointed out the unlit four upper floors that were either chained off or gated up.
Notably, the floor guide speaks to a once significant presence of Nordstrom in the facility, but the company pulled out in August 2023 after more than 30 years of residence.
According to ABC7 News, during its reign in Westfield Mall, the retail shoe company commandeered space on five levels which amounted to 312,000 square feet.
Johnson continued to describe the mall as the “ruins of a lost civilization.”
“What killed the civilization?” he asked. The answer to this according to Johnson is the condition; “wokeness”.
It is not the first time Johnson documented the effects of crime on San Francisco’s retail scene. On May 27, Knewz.com reported on a video of a similar walk-through at a Target department store in San Francisco’s “Tenderloin’ district.
There, the footage depicted an armed guard in battle fatigues manning the exit causing Johnson to label the branch the ‘most dangerous’ department store in America.
