California Gov. Gavin Newsom boasted he has doubled the National Guard presence at the southern U.S. border, posting a clip of himself purportedly near the San Ysidro port of entry.
But Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, who has logged in countless hours along the U.S.- Mexico border, called out the Democrat on his claims.
“We’re just down here with the National Guard meeting with customs agents as well as Border Patrol, talking about our partnerships,” Newsom said in the video, asserting that there are 390 National Guard troops operating to stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S.
“The bottom line at the end of the day, they need more resources. Everybody needs more resources,” he added before blaming everything on Republicans who are “consistently standing in the way of providing” those resources and support.
“It’s time for them to stop playing politics…and do the right thing,” Newsom said, calling out House Speaker Mike Johnson in particular.
One of the many obvious problems with the governor’s claims was that not “a single one” of those purported National Guard troops were seen by Melugin in the critical crossing areas.
“Haven’t seen one – not a single one – of these CA National Guard soldiers in Jacumba where the mass illegal crossings of adult men from around the world are taking place,” he posted on X Thursday, including the video of Newsom.

“BP there so overwhelmed that the migrants wander aimlessly on highways and call Lyfts for themselves while waiting to be picked up, as San Diego sector now leads the nation in illegal crossings,” he added.
“I sent Gov. Newsom’s below post to a BP agent in Jacumba, who responded by laughing & telling me CA ‘isn’t doing sh-t to help them with illegal crossings there, and any soldiers that they see there are National Guard from other states working w/ DHS under federal Title 10 orders,” Melugin wrote. “He said CA soldiers are helping with drug interdiction at ports of entry – not the mass crossing hot spots in Jacumba.”
“If the Governor’s office has any images of CA National Guard helping Border Patrol in Jacumba, I’m happy to update,” the reporter concluded.
A short time later, Melugin updated with a statement from Manny Bayon, president of the San Diego Local Border Patrol Union.
“California Governor @GavinNewsom refuses to acknowledge the many illegal migrants pouring into California due to his policies he has in place. This is also sending a message to the world, come to California, a sanctuary state,” he told Fox News.
“We need help in stemming the flow of illegal migrants entering California, not rewarding illegal migrants with taxpayer funded programs,” he added. “Governor, if you are serious about closing the California/ Mexico border, you would allow CA National guard to help us in enforcement operations. I would be glad to provide you a border tour so you can see for yourself.“
NEW: Many Bayon, the President of the Border Patrol union’s San Diego area representation – tells @FoxNews he has never seen CA National Guard assisting BP agents in Jacumba, and provided the following statement:
“California Governor @GavinNewsom refuses to acknowledge the many…

Matt Finn, a Los Angeles-based correspondent for Fox News Channel, was on the ground in Jacumba and related that “We see migrants illegally crossing all hours of the day.”
He noted that those migrants include those from China, Iran, Yemen, and Nepal.
“Haven’t seen a single CA National Guard over the past week,” he reported.
Finn countered leftist critics who bought into Newsom’s narrative on X.

Border Patrol estimated it at 400. Is that a small group to you? Also, do you think much has changed in four days?

He confirmed there was still no sign of the California National Guard as of Friday morning.
Good Friday morning outside of San Diego. Fresh group of migrants freely crossed into CA. Made fires while waiting to be processed. Little to no deterrence and no CA National Guard. pic.twitter.com/slwb2XlChe
