The dispatchers for 911 across the country receive an estimated 240 million calls per year.
But no one ever received a 911 call like this before.
And a Florida woman called 911 to report herself for one crime that left police dumbfounded.
It is hard to imagine a world without 911 emergency services.
But it has not been around forever.
The 911 system was developed by AT&T and the first call was made in Alabama on February 16, 1968.
Today, there are more than 5,700 primary and secondary Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) in the United States that manage 911 calls.
Over 3,000 counties have their own 911 centers.
Dispatchers across the country receive an average of 600,000 calls to 911 per day.
Most people call 911 to report a crime or a health emergency.
However, there are some who call for reasons like an overflowing toilet, dead batteries in a smoke detector, barking dogs, and even bad Chinese food.
But 37-year-old Christy Turman recently made a call unlike any other before in the history of 911.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Florida 911 dispatchers received a call recently about an attempted carjacking at a dealership.
Turman told the dispatchers that she was the one stealing the car and wanted to report herself for “stealing a car that’s not legally mine.”
“Because I’m trying to steal a car that’s not legally mine,” Turman told a dispatcher during the 911 call. “So, y’all better come make a report,” she continued. “I’m reporting this.”
When deputies from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene, they found Turman exiting the driver’s side of a stolen Toyota Corolla.
Turman informed the police officers that she was trained to steal the car in a game of Black Ops but called 911 to somehow make it legal.
“Deputies arrived at the dealership a short time later, where they say they found Turman exiting the driver’s side of the stolen Toyota Corolla,” WAVY reported. “The 37-year-old told deputies she was being trained in a game of Black Ops to steal a car but called authorities to make her carjacking legal.”
Of course, stealing a car is illegal even if you do report yourself to 911.
Turman was arrested and faces several trespassing charges.
