According to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s office, an 84-year-old resident has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of his 82-year-old wife in what may have been a mercy killing.
Dan Mook is accused of stabbing his 82-year-old wife to death, then turning the knife on himself.
The suspect was discovered with multiple self-inflicted cuts and stab wounds at an assisted living facility in Burlington County on Sunday, according to officials. He is said to be in stable condition at Cooper University Hospital after surviving the stabbing.
Mook, of Fernbrooke Lane, was charged with first-degree murder, illegal weapon possession, and unlawful weapon possession for an unlawful purpose. After the incident, he was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he is still in stable condition.
In a press release, the investigation began when Mount Laurel Police Department officers were dispatched to an assisted living facility just before 7:30 p.m. for a report of a stabbing. On May 15, they discovered the suspect with numerous self-inflicted cuts and stab wounds when they arrived.
Sharon Mook, his wife, was discovered dead in their bedroom. An autopsy performed by Burlington County Medical Examiner Dr. Ian Hood ruled the cause of death to be multiple stabs and slash wounds.
The preliminary investigation indicated that the defendant killed his wife because she was ill and he was afraid she was suffering.
Dan faces charges of first-degree murder, third-degree unlawful weapon possession, and fourth-degree unlawful weapon possession for an unlawful purpose.
The BCPO and the Mount Laurel Police Department are conducting the investigation, with assistance from the Burlington County Medical Examiner’s Office. BCPO Detectives Jenn Marchese and Melyssa Alonso, as well as MLPD Detective Thomas Corsanico, are the lead investigators.
