U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, whose stunning vote to oust her party’s former speaker last year made her target for revenge, triumphed in her Republican primary, beating back a pair of opponents and prevailing over Kevin McCarthy’s political crusade against her.
Mace, who likewise enjoyed the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, easily defeated her chief Republican rival, Catherine Templeton, who had McCarthy’s backing in a contest that carried national implications. The Associated Press called the race at 8:40 p.m.
It was the first test in the former speaker’s quest for political retribution against the eight Republicans who voted him out.
It was a pricey primary, too, with outside political groups spending more than $8 million to boost their preferred candidates. The biggest chunk of it — some $3.5 million — was spent on messaging that opposed Mace, according to the latest analysis from OpenSecrets, a nonpartisan nonprofit group that tracks campaign finance data.
Unofficial late returns gave Mace 57 percent of the vote to Templeton’s 30 percent. Retired Marine Bill Young drew 13 percent support.
Mace will take on the winner of the 1st District’s Democratic primary, businessman Michael B. Moore, in the fall as she seeks a return to Capitol Hill for a third term. Moore defeated attorney Mac Deford for the Democratic nomination.
