A wave of international populism had comedian Bill Maher warning American leftists about how they were setting themselves up to get “f*cked” come the November election.
Whether talking about El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele, Argentina’s Javier Milei or Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, strong national sentiments have had a growing impact on elections as citizens have increasingly opposed the detrimental impacts of Marxist globalism. Even President Joe Biden’s recent lip service to his border crisis with a toothless executive order showed a growing understanding among the establishment that open borders were a losing enterprise.
During the latest installment of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” the host contended just how bad it could get after chiding corporate media’s blanket slams against defenders of national sovereignty.
Specifically bringing up attacks against Italian Prime Minster Giorgia Meloni by pointing out that a party’s roots did not dictate how the party currently acted, Maher reminded, “I always say, and the Democratic Party has roots in slavery and Jim Crow, and not that long ago, Robert Byrd was the Senate Majority Leader in my lifetime and he was in the [Ku Klux] Klan.”
“So I don’t think she’s a fascist. But what she is, is the only one who’s strong on immigration in the European Union,” the comedian asserted. “Voters again for the European Parliament said we do not like this much immigration.”
Citing The Atlantic’s David Frum who said, “If liberals insist that enforcing borders is a job only fascists will do, then voters will hire fascists to do what liberals won’t,” Maher continued, “Voters keep saying over and over again we are not comfortable with this level of immigration. I understand why. It doesn’t make you a racist to say that.”
While the Democratic side of the establishment may have recognized that as Senate Leader Chuck Schumer (D), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D) and the administration worked to push out Biden’s order on capping the acceptable number of daily asylum seekers while scapegoating the GOP on the border, California Sen. Alex Padilla (D) had run a tired play demonizing former President Donald Trump.
“By reviving Trump’s asylum ban, Biden has undermined American values,” said Maher quoting Padilla before leveling, “And then they all stand back and go, ‘We don’t want to be called a racist. So we will not make a move on immigration.’ It’s going to get them f*cked at Election Day. It’s happening. It’s happening in Europe right now. And it proves it in Europe, and it’s going to happen here in America. It happened with Brexit. It’s going to happen again.”
Author Joel Stein, appearing as a guest alongside co-host of “The View” Ana Navarro, balked at agreements on “technicalities” and attempted to defend the “real moral reason” for open borders, prompting Maher to fire back, “At any number?”
“No, no,” he defended as the host hammered home, “But that’s their point.”
The comedian went on to cite polling from CBS News/YouGov that showed 62% of registered voters were in favor of showing all illegal aliens the door. That data also found that Trump was viewed as the clear favorite for dealing with the border crisis.

Proving Maher’s point that the left was out of touch on this issue, Stein leaned back on talking point rhetoric and asserted, “Yeah, people hate immigrants.”
“They don’t hate immigrants,” countered the host before Navarro got the last word on the issue, selling “comprehensive immigration reform” in lieu of addressing the porous border.
