On Saturday, critics tore into Politico after they attempted to rebrand Democrat District Attorney Alvin Bragg as a “reluctant prosecutor” of former President Donald Trump after he was convicted of 34 felony counts related to hush money payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels.
The article, entitled “This reluctant prosecutor just made Donald Trump a felon,” attempted to label Bragg as an “apolitical” participant of the trial, in spite of the fact that Bragg had campaigned for his position as DA on “getting Trump.”’
“The Harlem Democrat, who at times seemed like a reluctant participant in a trial he launched, secured a place in history as the first prosecutor to land the conviction of an American president,” the Politico report read.
Many were quick to criticize the outlet for the headline and a community note was added to the post debunking its claims.
Multiple times during his campaign, Bragg promised that he would pursue and prosecute Trump. During a December 2020 campaign forum, he boasted about his work in the lawsuit against the Donald J. Trump Foundation, which occurred while he served as the New York State chief deputy attorney general from 2017 to 2018, per the Washington Times.
“I have investigated Trump and his children and held them accountable for their misconduct with the Trump Foundation,” he said on the campaign trail. “I know how to follow the facts and hold people in power accountable.”
Bragg repeatedly bragged about his tough-on-Trump stance during his DA campaign, the Times noted.
“It is a fact that I have sued Trump more than a hundred times,” Bragg said. “I can’t change that fact, nor would I. That was important work. That’s separate from anything that the DA’s office may be looking at now.”
During an interview with CNN in 2021, he said that he “personally” planned to focus on the Trump case immediately after becoming DA.
“This is obviously a consequential case, one that merits the attention of the DA personally,” Bragg said at the time.
Many were critical of the outlet’s use of the term “reluctant”
Following the verdict, Bragg doubled down, saying that it was his duty to prosecute the former president, and said he had done his job.
“I did my job. Our job is to follow the facts and the law without fear or favor. And that’s exactly what we did here. And what I feel is gratitude to work alongside phenomenal public servants who do that each and every day in matters that you all write about… I did my job. We did our job. Many voices out there. The only voice that matters is the voice of the jury. And the jury has spoken,” Bragg said on Thursday evening, hours after the verdict.
“The 12 everyday jurors vowed to make a decision based on the evidence and the law, and the evidence and the law alone. Their deliberations led them to a unanimous conclusion beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant, Donald J. Trump, is guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree to conceal a scheme to corrupt the 2016 election,” Bragg added.
