A NATO Baltic state, Finland, released a statement claiming that one of Vladimir Putin‘s bombers breached its airspace during a recent military exercise.
Knewz.com has learned that the incursion is alleged to have taken place on the morning of June 10, for two minutes.
The aircraft was said to have flown 1,5 miles deep into Finnish territory and the incident has since triggered a response from the country’s defense minister, Antti Häkkänen, who released a statement saying:
“We take the suspected territorial violation seriously and the investigation has been started immediately,” via Finland’s Defense Ministry.
The Russian military administration has since confirmed its exercises in the Baltic, saying:
“Long-range aviation aircraft carried out scheduled flights in the airspace over the neutral waters of the Baltic, Barents and Norwegian seas.”
It went on to specify that the exercise comprised “Tu-95ms strategic missile carriers, as well as Tu-22m3 long-range bombers.”
“The longest flight was more than 6 hours,” the Russian Ministry of Defense specified on its Telegram account, but made no mention of an incursion on Finnish air space.
“Fighter escort was provided by the crews of Su-30cm, Su-27, Su-33 aircraft of the Aerospace Forces and naval aviation of the Navy,” and then also noted, “at certain stages of the route, long-range bombers were accompanied by fighters from foreign countries.”
It concluded its account of the operation in the Baltic by rubbishing Finland’s claims.
“All flights of aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces are carried out in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace,” the update stated.
This breach follows reports of a Ukrainian Kamikaze drone strike deep inside Russia. Said incursion took place on June 8 and is believed to have damaged one of Russia’s highly secretive Su-57 all-purpose jets. A Telegram account affiliated with the Russian military confirmed the attack.
According to Finland, this is not Russia’s first such infraction.
Its Ministry of Defense noted that the last time Russia violated its airspace was in 2022 when two of its fighter jets buzzed the Gulf of Finland.
Finland is the newest member of NATO and its decision to join the military alliance has drawn ire from Russia.
This development comes amidst a rallying of anti-Russian determination among the Baltic states.
According to a report by Germany’s Der Spiegel, a few Baltic leaders told German Chancellor, Olaf Sholz, that they would send troops to fight Russia if it made significant gains in Ukraine.
An article by The New Voice of Ukraine quoted said leaders saying: “In such a scenario, we won’t wait for Russian troops to reach our borders.”
“We will send our forces to Ukraine, making NATO a party to the conflict.”
These assertions, made by leaders who preferred to remain anonymous, came in the context of the intensifying Russian assault on Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, and Scholz’s policy denying the defending country the right to use German weapons on Russian soil.
