A funeral home in Nebraska got quite a shock when they discovered a 74-year-old woman was still breathing before attempting to embalm her.
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said the woman had been transported from a nursing home where she was declared dead to the Butherus-Maser & Love Funeral Home in Lincoln on Monday morning.
Authorities responded to the funeral home after an employee “instantly called 911” when they noticed breathing, Lancaster County Chief Deputy Ben Houchin reported during a news conference.
Funeral home staff attempted CPR before she was transported to a hospital where she is still alive, Houchin said.
Houchin added that since her death was anticipated and nothing about it appeared suspicious the nursing home was not required to contact a coroner after she was declared dead.
No criminal charges are pending, and the sheriff’s office is investigating.
