The autopsy report for Marco Troper, the son of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, revealed that he passed away from an accidental drug overdose.
SFGATE reported that the 19-year-old college student overdosed on a combination of cocaine, amphetamines, alprazolam, an anti-anxiety drug that is a key ingredient in Xanax, and hydroxyzine, an antihistamine.
The coroner’s report from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office also noted that low levels of THC were in his system at the time of his death. Officials said that he had enough alprazolam and cocaine in his system to lead to his death.
The report noted that the overdose was believed to be accidental, and his cause of death is now listed as “acute combined drug toxicity.”
On Feb. 13, Troper, a freshman and math major at UC Berkeley, was found unresponsive in his dorm room on the college’s Clark Kerr campus. Investigators said that “suspected illicit and prescription drugs, including Percocet and Oxycodone were found in abundance” at the scene, and were likely contributors to his death, the coroner’s report notes said.
Troper’s grandmother, Esther Wojcicki, expressed concern at the time of his death that she, and the rest of his family, were concerned that he had begun using drugs during his time in college.
“He ingested a drug, and we don’t know what was in it,” she told SFGATE in February. “One thing we do know, it was a drug.”
A sheriff’s technician with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau, Brandi Foscalina, told SFGATE that Troper’s death is no longer under investigation and did not provide further information.
Troper is one of five children Susan Wojcicki had with her husband, Dennis Troper. His grandmother is referred to by some as the “Godmother of Silicon Valley,” according to SFGATE, having founded the Palo Alto High School Media Arts Program and written a book titled “How to Raise Successful People.”
His aunt Anne Wojcicki is one of the founders of 23andMe, the genetic testing company, and another aunt, Janet Wojcicki, is a professor at UC San Francisco.
Troper’s mentor, Professor Freedom Cheteni, called him a “moonshot kid” following his passing, per the New York Post.
“With profound sadness, my most extraordinary moonshot kid, Marco Troper whose light, leadership and love will never diminish unexpectedly died,” he wrote in a post on Facebook, alongside photos of Troper and his cousins. “Marco and I were working on his most inspiring idea to cure cancer leveraging nanotechnologies and Ai the last six years.”
“He was incredibly intelligent, curious, and creative — often showing up to class and community events with a bright smile and an infectious energy,” said the dean of the Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School Than Healy, where Troper had attended school prior to college. Healy called him “an avid mathematician and computer scientist [who] relished tackling challenging problems.”
“He was everything you could have wished for in a son and a grandson,” Esther Wojcicki told SFGate. “He was destined to make a difference, it’s heartbreaking.”
