Fulton County District Attorney (DA) Fani Willis’ RICO case against Donald Trump has been halted until after the presidential election.
The Post Millennial (TPM) reported that the Georgia Court of Appeals issued a stay on the case, pending a decision on whether Willis will be allowed to remain on it.
“The proceedings below in the Superior Court of Fulton County are hereby stayed pending the outcome of these appeals,” the court stated in its order.
Defendants Michael Roman, David Shafer, Robert Cheely, Mark Meadows, Donald Trump, Cathleen Latham, Rudy Giuliani, Jeff Clark, and Harrison Floyd brought the appeal.
Some X users have signaled this is good news for Trump.
“This case is literally OVER. There will be no pre-election trial. AMAZING FOR TRUMP,” posted one user.
Another wrote, “Nothing else can happen until they rule on her disqualification.”
George Papadopoulos weighed in on the news also, highlighting other major developments in Trump’s various court hearings that have impacted his 2024 election campaign.
“The Jack Smith case won’t be heard before the election. Fani Willis has imploded and is facing disbarment. The Bragg case has now been exposed for the fraud it was,” he said, adding, This is what happens when tough hitting congressional hearings take place in prime time. Keep ‘em coming!”
Kyle Becker echoed a similar sentiment, outlining a possible path forward for the former president to the White House in November.
Willis faces a crucial hearing later this year, potentially pushing the case’s proceedings to after the election.
The tentative date for the hearing is October 4th, Resist the Mainstream reported.
Trump’s attorney Steven Sadow said, “We look forward to presenting arguments before Judges Brown, Markle, and Land on why this case should be dismissed and Fulton County DA Willis should be disqualified for the trial court’s acknowledged ‘odor of mendacity’ misconduct in violation of the Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct.”
The challenge to Willis’ role stems from revelations of an affair with one of the attorneys she enlisted for the case.
She and special prosecutor Nathan Wade have also been accused of financial impropriety.
The appeals court’s approval of the former president’s bid to oust Willis from overseeing his election fraud trial dealt another blow for the DA last month.
Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee previously decided that Willis could remain involved in the case if Wade were to recuse himself.
“This finding is by no means an indication that the Court condones this tremendous lapse in judgment or the unprofessional manner of the District Attorney’s testimony during the evidentiary hearing,” McAfee stated at the time, as outlined by TPM.
“Rather, it is the undersigned’s opinion that Georgia law does not permit the finding of an actual conflict for simply making bad choices — even repeatedly — and it is the trial court’s duty to confine itself to the relevant issues and applicable law properly brought before it,” he added.
Wade submitted his resignation as Special Prosecutor for the Fulton County DA’s office in March, effective immediately.
This move was dubbed a “slap on the wrist” by many commentators online.
