(NewsNation) — Newly discovered photos of suspected serial killer Rex Heuermann place him at a gun club just miles away from where the remains of two women were found days later.
The photos, taken in 2006, show Heuermann at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club in Manorville, New York, allegedly taken the day before Jessica Taylor disappeared.
The architect was arrested last July in connection to the killings of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. In early June, he was charged with second-degree murder in connection to the deaths of Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla.
The gun club confirmed with NewsNation that, while Heuermann is not and never was a member of the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club, he did attend some public gun safety events and participate in marksmanship competitions.
“For the record, the last time we can verify that Mr. Heuermann was onsite at a competition was April 2010,” the club said in a statement.
Police have already visited the gun club previously, asking for records after the discovery of bodies in Manorville.
Legal analyst Misty Marris said having photographic evidence is paramount when aged forensic evidence is involved.
“From the prosecutor’s perspective, putting him in the area is certainly something that’s going to be very impactful for the case,” Marris said.
In a Thursday news conference, attorney John Ray claimed he had evidence showing Heuermann’s family members’ involvement. Ray did not provide a direct link tying the family members to the six women’s deaths, however, and only referenced violent content his children had shared and liked online.
Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him. Throughout the case, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney has clarified that his Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, and her children were out of town each time Heuermann allegedly committed crimes.
“As the task force continues to investigate, certainly the family and other individuals could be implicated,” she said.
But until evidence is presented, Marris said that is too presumptive of a claim to make.
