Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday that his nation will not accept a ceasefire deal that does not allow it to completely destroy Hamas.
This was just shortly after U.S. President Joe Biden introduced a so-called Israeli “proposal” that would allow Hamas to survive in this conflict, Breitbart reports.
On Friday, Biden presented a proposal, which he purported was made by Israel, for a ceasefire. However, the terms do not even reference Hamas a disarmament of i. The terms do require Israel to withdraw from Gaza and cease hostilities.
Biden has more than once claimed that the proposal was initiated by Israel, although former President Barack Obama said something different, suggesting that the proposal was actually Biden’s own.
Concurrently, Biden cautioned right-wing factions within the Israeli government against rejecting the proposal, while paradoxically commending the Israeli government for allegedly offering it. These parties were unable to respond due to their observance of the Jewish Sabbath.
In the ensuing hours, Hamas expressed approval of the deal as did European leaders.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu issued a statement indicating that the proposal diverged from Israel’s actual stipulations.
Netanyahu released statement to further clarify:
“Israel’s conditions for ending the war have not changed: the destruction of Hamas’s military and governing capabilities, the freeing of all hostages and ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel. Under the proposal, Israel will continue to insist these conditions are met before a permanent ceasefire is put in place. The notion that Israel will agree to a permanent ceasefire before these conditions are fulfilled is a non-starter.”
The intention of Biden seemed to be to corner Israel into an agreement it never proposed by claiming that Israel had offered it and subsequently having Hamas and the international community accept this proposal, thereby increasing the cost for Israel to decline his proposal on the world stage.
The comes wake of the fact that on Tuesday former President Donald Trump was seen criticizing Netanyahu, saying that the PM could have prevented the Oct. 7th massacre from happening at the hands of Hamas. Netanyahu was a close ally of Trump during Trump’s first presidency.
“Oct. 7 should have never happened,” Trump said. “Everything was there to stop that. And a lot of people knew about it, you know, thousands and thousands of people knew about it, but Israel didn’t know about it, and I think he’s being blamed for that very strongly.”
Despite Biden’s repeated statements regarding this war, Netanyahu not too long ago issued a statement on X, saying, “if we have to stand alone, we will stand alone. If we need to, we will fight with our fingernails. But we have much more than fingernails.”
As the discourse unfolds, the reactions of the involved parties will be crucial. Netanyahu’s resolute declaration is a clear indication of Israel’s priorities and conditions for a potential ceasefire.
The unfolding events will have significant implications and reach for the future of the region and the ongoing conflict.
