The internet was shocked to learn about American Idol alum Mandisa’s death earlier this year.
The Grammy winner passed away at age 47 on April 18, which was confirmed by the Christian radio network K-Love, as previously reported by Resist the Mainstream.
The autopsy report has since been obtained by People magazine, revealing that her death was due to complications from class III obesity.
Class III obesity, defined by Cleveland Clinic as having a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related health conditions, can lead to severe health issues such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
The autopsy report classified her death as natural.
Mandisa was found dead in her Nashville home, though no cause of death was immediately available according to local reports.
There were also no signs of foul play.
A representative for the beloved singer asked for prayers for her family during the incredibly difficult time back in April.
“We can confirm that yesterday Mandisa was found in her home deceased,” the representative stated on Facebook. “At this time we do not know the cause of death or any further details. We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
American Idol honored Mandisa during an April episode, the New York Post reported.
A tribute involved a performance by alums Colton Dixon, Melinda Doolittle, and Danny Gokey, who covered Mary Mary’s “Shackles (Praise You).”
The show issued a heartfelt statement too, stating “Mandisa was an adored icon on American Idol and in the music industry.”
“She had become a platinum-selling artist and had won several Grammys for her music,” it added. “Her passing has left everyone on the show heartbroken, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family.”
K-Love’s chief media officer David Pierce reflected on Mandisa’s impact in music two months ago, noting her deep faith and the personal struggles she bravely shared with the public, the Western Journal reported.
“Mandisa loved Jesus, and she used her unusually extensive platform to talk about Him at every turn,” Pierce said.
“Her kindness was epic, her smile electric, her voice massive, but it was no match for the size of her heart.
“Mandisa struggled, and she was vulnerable enough to share that with us, which helped us talk about our own struggles.
“Mandisa’s struggles are over. She is with the God she sang about now.
“While we are saddened, Mandisa is home. We’re praying for Mandisa’s family and friends and ask you to join us,” he continued.
Mandisa’s journey to stardom began when she captivated audiences on American Idol in 2005.
Her memorable interaction with judge Simon Cowell, where she expressed forgiveness despite being hurt by his comments, won her many admirers.
Mandisa finished in the Top 10 of Season 5 of American Idol.
She placed ninth and cited Def Leppard and Whitney Houston as influences.
She released her debut album, “True Beauty,” in 2007, and her 2013 album, “Overcomer,” won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album, per the Post.
