Donald Trump made a triumphant return to Washington D.C. on Thursday, where he met with Republicans to lay out a day-one agenda in a show of unity ahead of the 2024 elections.
Even former critics, like Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), had positive things to say about Trump during the dramatic visit, his first in Washington since the January 6th riot.
The former and possibly future president touted “1000%” unity at an event with the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).
“This is an outstanding group of people. I’m with them 1,000 percent; they’re with me 1,000 percent. We agree just about on everything, and if there isn’t, we work it out,” Trump said.
Trump’s triumphant return
Earlier in the day, Trump had a private huddle with House Republicans, where he praised the “good job” Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is doing and ripped “dirty b——s” in the Justice Department.
The show of unity underscored Trump’s dramatic political resurrection since January 6th, when a group of his supporters rioted at the Capitol. McConnell blamed Trump at the time for the “insurrection.”
But it’s all water under the bridge as Trump – now the GOP’s presumptive nominee for president – gears up for a historic battle against Joe Biden in November. Polls show Trump and Biden in a close race, with many Americans feeling nostalgic for the prosperity of Trump’s presidency.
McConnell, meeting with Trump for the first time since 2020, said they had a “really positive meeting.”
“We had a really positive meeting,” McConnell said. “He and I got a chance to talk a little bit, shook hands a few times.”
Trump, Republicans undaunted
The pressure on Trump has only grown since January 6th, with the presidential nominee recently being branded a “convicted felon” in a criminal trial widely seen as politically motivated.
But the tone from Trump and his Republican colleagues, Thursday, was effusive and optimistic despite the obstacles in Trump’s way.
“Anybody who thought that this president was going to be down after the sham trial … . It’s only giving him even more energy,” said Rep. Tom Emmer (Mn.), the GOP whip. “Donald Trump is crushing this election.”
Not everyone was pleased with the visit. Democrat Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.), who orchestrated the partisan January 6th committee investigation, said Trump was “returning to the scene of the crime.”
Trump’s sentencing for his “hush money” conviction is set for July 11, only days before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
