On Sunday, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) announced to Fox News that no change has occurred at the border since President Joe Biden’s executive order targeting immigration, claiming instead that it’s “accelerating” the number of crossings.
Abbott was making an appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures With Maria Bartiromo” to discuss the border crisis as his state bears the brunt of the issue, sharing the largest border with Mexico out of any U.S. State. Bartiromo began by asking Abbott if there had been any meaningful change at the border since Biden announced his executive order on Tuesday, June 4.
The new order, Biden’s latest attempt to prove that he’s willing to get tough on the border, will pause new asylum requests after migrant crossings hit a seven-day daily average of 2,500 and resume after hitting a seven-day daily average of 1,500.
However, Abbott said there had been no change “whatsoever.”
“None whatsoever,” Abbott said. “Listen, people need to understand that what Biden has done, he’s not doing anything to actually secure the border. In fact, it’s the opposite because he’s actually authorizing more people to cross the border illegally. Think about this: when you get to that 2,500 number of people crossing the border a day that he says he will allow, but only then stop the asylum process, when he stops the asylum process, there’s nothing that Biden is doing that actually is preventing anybody else from crossing the border.”
“There’s no type of enforcement mechanism in place. So as long as the Biden administration refuses to provide any type of enforcement, any type of blockage of people crossing illegally, all this new Biden policy is going to do is to actually attract and invite even more people to cross the border illegally. You’ve seen on videos ever since the Biden order went into place: there’s no slowing down of people crossing the border; in fact, it’s just accelerating.”
“So this is gaslighting our fellow Americans when Biden gets up and says this is going the stop people from coming across the border, when he says this is going to secure the border — in fact, it is making the border illegal crossings worse,” Abbott said.
Over 100,000 encounters occurred between U.S. Customs and Border Protection and illegal immigrants in both March and April of this year, according to data from the entity. In March, Border Patrol recorded 137,480 encounters, and in April they recorded 128,900 encounters.
This news comes just weeks after a damning report from the New York Post, revealing that Biden has been quietly running a “mass amnesty” program for migrants, using a loophole in the immigration system to close over 350,000 asylum cases filed by migrants since 2022, as long as they did not have a criminal record, or were deemed a threat to the U.S.
Termination of an asylum case means that migrants no longer need to report to U.S. authorities, and can move around the country freely. They are also removed from the legal system, making deportation proceedings even more difficult, as immigration officials have to start from scratch on their cases.
