Newly posted video from the back of a police car captures the moment right after world’s top golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested.
He admitted to police, “I should have stopped,” in the footage, and also accused Detective Bryan Gillis of being “over-aggressive” and “hitting me with his flashlight.”
Scheffler made headlines earlier this month after he was arrested just before his second round at the PGA Championship at Valhalla in Kentucky.
Stunning images captured golf’s top player in handcuffs before authorities took him to jail for not following police orders during a pedestrian fatality investigation, Resist the Mainstream reported.
The 27-year-old faced four charges, including second-degree assault of a police officer, which is a felony. All of which Louisville Police previously indicated will not be dropped during a press conference.
Police, however, have reportedly moved to drop all charges against Scheffler, according to Kentucky radio personality Terry Meiners.
SB Nation has confirmed the story also.
Last week footage was released showing the arrest, which some on social media dubbed a police “overreaction.”
This week video from the back of the police car Scheffler was held in shows the golfer claiming he “was not aware” Gillis was a cop, Daily Mail reports.
Scheffler explained what happened from his perspective, stating to an officer, “So, um, my house is right up that road and so I was planning on getting here at 5:50am to start my workout for my tee time. I (inaudible) and that took me about a half hour.
“So I’m pulling in here and the police officer up there told me to come the opposite way with the traffic and then come in.
“But as I was pulling in, my window was down, and the officer told me to stop.
“First of all, I did not know that he was a police officer, I thought he was one of the security guards that was mistaken,” Scheffler continues before being interrupted by the officer.
“Why does it matter if he’s a security guard or a police officer if someone tells you to stop?” the officer probes, to which Scheffler replies, “Yes you’re right. I should have stopped.”
“I was getting quite impatient because I’m quite late for my tee time. As he reached into the car he grabbed my shoulder and hit me,” the golfer added.
“It seemed to be a little over aggressive because the entrance was open. I pulled forward because I thought he was going to start hitting me and I didn’t know who he was. He didn’t tell me he was a police officer,” Scheffler continued.
The officer presses Scheffler at another point in the video for hurting Gillis. “You actually hurt him. He’s a police officer. He’s got a huge scrape on his knee, he’s getting checked by EMS, he’s got a big bruise,” he said.
Gillis was notably given “corrective action” for his failure to activate his bodycam to record the encounter with Scheffler, Daily Mail reported.
