A Pennsylvania woman known for her visions and predictions of a nuclear armageddon has been found after she was believed dead for three decades.
Knewz.com has learned that the now 83-year-old Patricia Kopta turned up at a frail care facility 1,700 miles from her Pennsylvania home.
Kopta, noted to have been religious, lived in North Hills, Pittsburgh. On 27 November 1992, her husband, Bob, reported her missing months after he last saw her (in June of the same year).
When Bob alerted law enforcement, he noted that it was not unusual for her to disappear for long periods. However, her last extended absence landed her on the authority’s “critical missing persons” list and a high-priority search operation ensued.
An image of the Kopta was released as part of the search and stated: “Her family believes she took a flight to Puerto Rico after her disappearance and spent a week or two there before returning to Pittsburgh. She has not been seen or heard from since.”
While search efforts unfolded her husband lived with the fear that every dead body recovered by the police would be hers daily. In his attempts to find her, Bob placed adverts in Puerto Rican newspapers and even started seeing a psychic, per CBS News.
In 1999, authorities told her family that they had decided to declare her dead but little did they know, it was in the same year she was taken into a nursing home in Puerto Rico after she had been found wandering.
After 24 years of residence at the facility Patricia started talking about where she was for the first time. The employees at the facility contacted the relevant authorities in Pennsylvania and a DNA test ensued. When it came back positive her sister Gloria flew down to see the long-lost 83-year-old “Patty”.
Bob, 86-years-old when the news broke, expressed relief. He said “It’s a sad thing, but it’s a relief off my mind. When your wife goes missing, you’re a suspect.”
“After 30 years, you try to forget about it,” he told the media during a press conference (via KDKA). “Now, I can forget about it. We know what happened, and she is taken care of now. She could have come home any time. But that’s what she wanted. She always said she wanted to go to a warm climate.”
At the time of her revelations that led to her discovery, Patricia was rumored to have shown symptoms of dementia.
It was not the first time she was associated with mental health issues. She started wandering the streets in 1984 when she lost her job and was diagnosed with “delusions of grandeur”, per LAD Bible.
At the time, she was also believed to be suffering from schizophrenia. Some suspected that one of the reasons she left her husband and disappeared was that she became aware of the possibility that she would be institutionalized.
