Animal services called off the search for a small alligator that went missing last week at a middle school in Kansas City, Mo., but said personnel will continue patrolling the area around the school.
Lakeview Middle School in Kansas City held an end-of-year celebration on Thursday, May 23, that included a petting zoo brought in by an outside company, and a 14-inch alligator escaped.
The Kansas City Pet Project said its Animal Services Division was called to the scene to search for the small reptile, which had its mouth taped shut. It was last seen at around 11 a.m. on Thursday.
Animal Services officers, assisted by the Kansas City Fire Department, searched for the alligator for several hours Thursday, but were unable to locate it. Animal Services continued its on-the-ground search for several days.
“Lakeview Middle School did not obtain an animal shows permit from our Animal Services Division for the petting zoo, which is required per Chapter 14 of the city code,” KC Pet Project wrote in a Facebook post. Additionally, alligators aren’t allowed in Kansas City at all, per the Chapter 14 of the city code.
“Animal Services plans to issue citations for violations of Chapter 14 of the city code to the appropriate parties,” the agency said.
On Tuesday, KC Pet Project said no sightings had been reported, and it suspended its active search efforts. The agency said officers will continue patrolling the grounds near the middle school.
KC Pet Project is asking anyone with information or possible sightings to report them.
