NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd believes Hunter Biden’s conviction deals a “big blow” to former President Trump because it damages one of his key arguments.
Todd explained his reasoning behind this assumption Tuesday during a segment of MSNBC Reports.
“I think it really damages the Trump campaign’s ability to just wave away their conviction,” he said.
The analyst’s remarks come after Hunter’s conviction yesterday on federal charges for illegally possessing a firearm.
The charges stemmed from his purchase and ownership of a firearm while addicted to crack cocaine.
The 12-member jury reached a unanimous decision after approximately three hours of deliberations, Resist the Mainstream reported.
“Politically, this is a big blow to Trump, and that’s – I think – if you’re looking for just political fallout,” Todd said following the decision.
His remarks came amid Trump’s long accusation of Biden’s Department of Justice (DOJ) targeting him and instigating trials that have plagued him ahead of the 2024 election.
Trump recently claimed that the DOJ colluded with New York prosecutors to convict him on 34 counts of falsifying business records, Fox News outlined.
“[Trump’s] trying so hard to create this weaponization – and this has been a Republican talking point for so long,” Todd said, adding there’s “never been any evidence to support what they’ve said.”
Todd argued that Hunter’s conviction both highlights a lack of evidence for Trump’s accusation and evidence to “refute all of these claims.”
“Look, whether Trump still uses his grievance, you know, his various grievances, to go after the justice system, considering that he still has his own battles with them, doesn’t matter,” the host continued.
“But I don’t think this is going to be – if they’re hoping this persuades people in the middle, I don’t think Trump’s argument about the justice system is very persuasive now in the wake of this.”
The DOJ’s Merrick Garland published an op-ed on Tuesday denying all accusations of his department’s weaponization tactics.
“We do not investigate people because of their last name, their political affiliation, the size of their bank account, where they come from or what they look like,” he said.
“We investigate and prosecute violations of federal law — nothing more, nothing less.”
Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt dubbed the conviction “a distraction from the real crimes of the Biden Crime Family” in a statement, per Fox.
“Crooked Joe Biden’s reign over the Biden Family Criminal Empire is all coming to an end on November 5th, and never again will a Biden sell government access for personal profit,” it read.
Biden reacted to his son’s verdict, leaning into the Hunter’s battle with an addiction angle.
“So many families who have had loved ones battle addiction understand the feeling of pride in seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery,” he said.
“As I also said last week, I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal.”
“Jill and I will always be there for Hunter and the rest of our family with our love and support. Nothing will ever change that.”
