A judge has set bond at $5 million for Bionca Ellis, a 32-year-old Cleveland woman accused of killing 3-year-old Julian Wood in a double stabbing outside a Giant Eagle in North Olmsted.
Ellis made headlines for not only the brutal stabbing, but also the “evil” smirk she unveiled during her hearing Monday as the charges against her were read aloud.
Her arrest clip also made it’s rounds on social media amid the hearing.
ABC News reported earlier this month that Ellis allegedly stabbed a 3-year-old boy to death in a random attack outside the Ohio grocery store.
The incident occurred around 3 pm on Monday in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle in North Olmsted, about 15 miles from Cleveland.
The victims, Julian and his mother, Margot Wood, were both stabbed, according to North Olmsted police.
At the start of the arraignment hearing Monday, Ellis appeared via video with her head down as Judge Nancy Margaret Russo asked her a series of questions.
Ellis did not answer many of them, WTOL11 reported.
When Ellis did respond to the judge’s inquiries, her answers were typically short and vague.
“Do you have the money or means to hire an attorney?” Russo asked at one point of the hearing, to which Ellis plainly responded, “Possible.”
In another example, the judge questioned, “Have you received and read your indictment?” prompting Ellis to slyly reply, “I don’t know.”
Ellis’s responses did not improve once she entered the courtroom to face the judge directly.
The outlet noted that while the judge read through the indictment, Ellis appeared to smile at times before ultimately pleading not guilty to the charges.
Julian’s father addressed the court with a heartfelt statement before the judge announced the bond.
“That day, one week ago, she took everything from us. There’s nothing that could ever replace my son or anything that my wife and I, even our other kids, are going through,” he said.
“It’s horrendous. I really wish no bail. Period. Or extend it to the maximum limit possible that you can, at the very least.”
“Just do whatever you can to keep this monster behind bars,” he added.
Ellis’s charges include one count of aggravated murder; two counts of murder; two counts of attempted murder; two counts of felonious assault; one count of endangering children; one count of tampering with evidence and one count of misdemeanor theft.
X users promptly ripped Ellis online for her apparent lack of empathy and remorse during the hearing.
“Bionca Ellis had a warrant out for her arrest for a theft conviction,” Libs of TikTok highlighted.
“Police arrested her then released her. 4 days later she targeted a 3-year-old kid and stabbed him to d*ath.”
“Today she appeared in court laughing & smiling. How is this not a hate crime?” she continued.
End Wokeness emphasized the lack of traction this tragic story has received. “0 outrage, mourning, or kneeling in DC,” the account said.
“This story didn’t fit the narrative.”
A GoFundMe has been opened in the 3-year-old boy’s honor.
