A newly released survey reveals that the importance of marriage in society is up for debate.
Pew Research Center recently conducted a survey on social issues in America as they relate to the 2024 election, revealing some very interesting divides among supporters of incumbent President Joe Biden, and former President Donald Trump. Among the 8,709 adults they asked, 7,166 were registered voters and all were asked about a wide range of popular cultural issues such as immigration, gun rights, and marriage.
On the topic of marriage, Trump supporters were three times more likely (59%) to believe “it is better if people prioritize marriage and children,” meanwhile only 19% of Biden supporters believe the same thing. Overall, 39% of registered voters say that it is best if marriage and children are a priority, while 59% say “society is just as well off if people have priorities other than family and children.”
Upon breaking the numbers down by gender and race, it was discovered that 63% of male and 54% of female Trump supporters believe society should prioritize marriage and children. However, only 22% of male vs. 16% of female Biden supporters agree with the sentiment. Interestingly, black Biden supporters are the largest group at 29% to agree, while only 17% of white supporters and 16% of Hispanic supporters believe the same thing.
Other topics included women’s progress, which resulted in a “mirror image” result. About 73% of Biden supporters believe there are significant obstacles preventing women from getting ahead, meanwhile, the same number of Trump supporters believe that all major obstacles for women have been removed. Only a quarter of Biden supporters believe women do not face any obstacles, and a similar number of Trump supporters believe women do.
Abortion was another issue where political divides defined opinion. “About nine-in-ten Biden supporters (88%) say abortion should be legal in most (46%) or all (42%) cases. Just 11% of Biden supporters say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases,” reads the survey results. “Conversely, about six-in-ten Trump supporters (61%) say abortion should be illegal in all (11%) or most (50%) cases. A significant minority of Trump supporters say abortion should be legal in most or all cases (38%).”
If you separate the results by age, it becomes clear that younger Trump supporters are more likely to support abortion access, while support remains steady among all age groups of Biden supporters.
“About half of Trump supporters ages 18 to 34 (51%) say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, a substantially higher share than among older Trump supporters (35% of those 35 and older). Among Biden supporters, nearly nine-in-ten across all age groups say abortion should be legal in all or most cases,” the Pew results say.
Birth control was more popular, with over 90% of Biden supporters while 66% of Trump supporters said it is good for society for it to be easily accessible. Male Trump supporters were less likely (61%) than female Trump supporters (73%) to agree, while Biden supporters were evenly split among both genders.
Participants were also asked about in-vitro fertilization (IVF), which has recently become a hot topic among those who discuss social issues. Three-quarters of all voters, including the overwhelming majority of Biden supporters (83%) and a large majority of Trump supporters (64%), believe that society is better off having access to IVF.
