Kia America is recalling 462,869 Telluride SUVs because a motor in the front seat may overheat and start a fire, according to a notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The recall involves certain model year 2020–2024 Kia Telluride vehicles. According to the company, an impact to the front power seat side cover or slide knob can dislodge the power seat switch back cover, causing the slide knob to become stuck, resulting in the seat’s motor operating continuously and overheating, which can cause a fire while driving or parked.
According to the NHTSA, seven separate incidents were reported, with several involving smoke in the passenger cabin and localized melting of the seat tilt motor and one involving a fire under the driver’s seat while driving.
The NHTSA said no injuries, crashes or fatalities were reported as a result of the defect.
Owners are advised to park the recalled vehicles outside and away from structures until they are repaired. Dealers will install a bracket for the power seat switch back covers and replace the seat slide knobs free of charge.
Kia said owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 30.
