Russian troops recently filmed a disturbing video of themselves torturing a group of Ukrainian prisoners before leading them to a “mock execution.”
Knewz.com has learned that the footage was captured in the Kharkiv region in Ukraine, where Russian forces have been carrying out a renewed assault.
The video footage shows the four captured Ukrainian POWs being beaten, threatened, and marched through a forest, as five Russian troops try to make them sing the Soviet national anthem.
One of the Ukrainian soldiers was kicked in the groin, causing him to fall over. He was then kicked in the head.
One of the Russian paratroopers was heard saying in the video at that point, “Looks like we’re gonna have to kill him. Do we have to kill him? Hey, get up, get up.”
Shortly following the death threat, the paratrooper shot his rifle into the ground, barely inches from the fallen soldier’s head. The Ukrainian soldier did not seem to react to the shot and continued to groan in pain.
The short footage was shared on Telegram by Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, who wrote that the video showed Russian soldiers “mocking Ukrainian prisoners of war.”
“The video recorded beatings, humiliation, threats, and an imitation of a shooting. Unfortunately, such treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war is not an exception… but a common tactic for the occupiers,” Lubinets further wrote in his post.
“This case should be recorded as another proof of violation of international humanitarian law by the Russian Federation! I sent official letters to the ICRC and the UN to document the fact of abuse. This will be another addition to the evidence base for the future criminal tribunal,” he added.
The Ukrainian official also cited the Geneva Convention in his Telegram post and mentioned that “prisoners of war have the right to humane treatment.”
“Russia does not follow any rules of warfare and is absolutely not ashamed to demonstrate its cruel and anti-human actions! The world must react to bring Russia to justice, otherwise the law of force will defeat the force of law!”
On the other hand, one of the pro-war Z-channels on Telegram that shared the footage claimed, according to The Sun UK, that the actions of the Russian captors were nothing more than “a bit of a laugh about the Ukrainians… nothing major.”
The channel further claimed that the Russian soldiers were “high on adrenaline,” before posing the question, “Have you been to a battle? Have you lost combat comrades?”
Ombudsman Lubinets’s claim regarding Russia’s indifference to “rules of warfare” has been evident in other instances of cruelty against Ukrainian POWs. In July 2022, horrific footage came to light showing Russian soldiers tying up and castrating a captured Ukrainian soldier using what appeared to be a box cutter.
The news outlet The Independent reported at the time that the investigative outlet Bellingcat had found the footage to be authentic.
Inna Sovsun, a member of the Ukrainian Parliament, shared the graphic footage on X, formerly known as Twitter, following which her account was taken down.
She wrote in her original post, per The Independent, “Russian soldier from Chechen battalion Ahmat cut off the genitals of Ukrainian POW (prisoner of war). This is what Nazis are doing to Ukrainians. Russia has to pay for it!”
“Give Ukraine the weapons we need to stop this nightmare once and for all. The world can’t pretend like this isn’t happening!”
