History was made at the Nebraska State Capitol on Wednesday afternoon when Omaha native Malcolm X was inducted into the state’s hall of fame.
Mrs. Rowena Moore founded the Malcolm X Memorial Foundation in 1971. Through her efforts, a historical marker was placed his birth site 16 years later. Mrs. Moore played a major role in this moment in Nebraska history.
“Our founder, Mrs. Rowena Moore, would be proud, but she would also say we’ve come a long way,” said Executive Director of the Malcolm X Foundation, Joanna Ejike. “Her mission was to make sure that Malcolm was recognized as being born in Omaha all across the country.”
Malcolm X is now the 27th member of the Nebraska Hall of Fame, and the first Black person to be inducted. {snip}

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen made this moment an official day to celebrate Malcolm’s induction into the hall of fame.

“This is the third time he was selected to be inducted and we are just now doing it, so this is the opportunity for us to correct what people have misunderstood brother Malcolm to be,” Ejike said. “So we can teach the next generation the proper way.”
