South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican, has been officially banned by every tribe in her state. The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe became the ninth tribe to ban the governor on Tuesday after she told parents during a town hall that children on reservations “have no hope,” according to a new report.
Tribes across South Dakota have taken this action following Noem’s comments alleging that Mexican drug cartels have infiltrated reservations and that the lack of tribal law enforcement has created deadly crises. Noem also suggested that cartels might be personally benefiting some tribal leaders.
“I’ve got nine Native American tribes, and the cartels are set up on our tribal grounds,” Noem told Newsmax. “They are facilitating this drug trafficking, this human trafficking through my tribal grounds here in South Dakota because I don’t have jurisdiction there.”
In response, tribes have called on Noem to apologize. The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe met with Noem on Monday and described the meeting as “respectful and productive,” according to USA Today.
Noem issued a statement to the tribe, saying it was never her intent to cause offense by discussing the challenges that tribes face.
“I want to focus on solutions that lead to safer communities for all our families, better educational outcomes for all our children, and declining addiction numbers for all of our people,” Noem said.
“It is my hope that the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe will give us the opportunity to partner together in a way that can be an example for all,” the governor added.
At a press conference on Friday, Noem stated that banishing her from tribal lands does not solve any problems.
“All it does is help those who are perpetuating horrible violence and crimes against the people of South Dakota,” Noem said.
In March, Noem further reinforced the divisions between the tribes and the rest of the state when she publicly accused tribal leaders of catering to drug cartels while neglecting the needs of children and the poor.
“We’ve got some tribal leaders that I believe are personally benefiting from the cartels being there, and that’s why they attack me every day,” Noem said at a forum.
“But I’m going to fight for the people who actually live in those situations, who call me and text me every day and say, ‘Please, dear governor, please come help us in Pine Ridge. We are scared,’” she noted.
Noem addressed the issue in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Tribal leaders should take action to ban the cartels from their lands and accept my offer to help them restore law and order to their communities while protecting their sovereignty,” Noem said. “We can only do this through partnerships because the Biden Administration is failing to do their job.”
Noem, once considered a potential running mate for former President Donald Trump, has faced criticism recently for her new book, “No Going Back.” In it, she recounts killing her 14-month-old dog, Cricket, and removed a passage describing her meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
