A Michigan judge was left astounded when a defendant, charged with driving with a suspended license, participated in a virtual court hearing while operating a vehicle.
The incident occurred during a hearing on May 15 in Ann Arbor for Corey Harris, whose case pertained to his suspended license.
As the assistant public defender introduced herself to Judge Cedric Simpson, Harris dialed into the Zoom hearing, catching the attention of the presiding judge.

“Mr. Harris, are you driving?” Judge Simpson questioned the defendant.
“Actually, I’m pulling into my doctor’s office,” Harris responded. “Just give me one second. I’m parking right now.”
With visible impatience, Judge Simpson waited for Harris to cease driving and park his vehicle safely.
Subsequently, as the proceedings commenced, Harris’ attorney requested an adjournment, proposing a delay of “possibly up to four weeks if the court would allow.”
Expressing bewilderment, Judge Simpson addressed the assistant public defender, “OK, so maybe I don’t understand something. This is a driving while license suspended [case], and he was just driving, and he doesn’t have a license.”
Harris appeared at a loss for words as the judge conveyed his astonishment.
“I don’t even know why he would do that,” remarked Judge Simpson, promptly revoking the defendant’s bond in the matter.
In a decisive move, he ordered Harris to surrender himself to the Washtenaw County Jail by 6 p.m. on the same day.
In a moment of disbelief, Harris whispered, “Oh my God,” while his attorney assured him of contacting him shortly thereafter.
