The Right had a field day after Liberal Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor admitted she sometimes finds herself in tears over the rulings of the conservative-dominated high court.
Sotomayor, 69, who some supporters have dubbed “the Wise Latina,” made this bizarre admission during an address on Friday to Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute during her acceptance of an award, Daily Mail reported.
“There are days that I’ve come to my office after an announcement of a case and closed my door and cried,” she said. “There have been those days. And there are likely to be more.”
“There are moments when I’m deeply, deeply sad. There are moments when, yes, even I feel desperation. We all do,” she added.
“But you have to own it, you have to accept it, you have to shed the tears and then you have to wipe them and get up,” she continued.
Sotomayor did not specify which cases had made her cry but admitted to experiencing intense feelings after certain judgments, per Daily Mail.
She is one of three remaining Democratic-appointed justices on the court, alongside Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Sotomayor has always been in the minority, however, the court has recently shifted further to the right under a 6-3 majority.
Conservatives swiftly blasted Sotomayor over her remarks, sparking some to do a victory lap for recent triumphs like the repeal of Roe vs. Wade.
“My politics are whatever makes her cry the hardest,” joked Sean Davis.
“Nothing like a good bucket full of liberal tears!” mocked another user.
Sotomayor has been under fire in recent months for similar headlines about the judge’s emotions over cases, with some commentators dubbing her more of an “activist” than a judge.
Resist the Mainstream reported earlier this year that liberal voices openly advocated for the retirement of Sotomayor to pave the way for a younger Democratic appointee before the next election.
The primary concern was preventing a potential 7-2 conservative majority, especially if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House in 2024.
Republican-turned-Democrat writer Josh Borro emphasized the stakes, stating, “If this is how the Democratic Party operates, it deserves to lose.”
Borro continued in his piece from March: “The cowardice in speaking up about Sotomayor — a diabetic who has in some instances been traveling with a medic — is part of a broader insanity in the way that the Democratic Party thinks about diversity and representation.”
“Representation is supposed to be important because the presence of diverse people in positions of power helps to ensure that the interests and preferences of diverse communities are taken into account when making policy,” he added.
“But in practice, Democratic Party actions around diversity tend to be taken for the benefit of diverse officials rather than diverse communities,” he argued.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked back in March about Sotomayor leaving the court, to which she said it would be a “personal decision for her to make.”
“That is something that, that she has to make. It’s not something that we make, we lean in on or get involved in. So I’m not even going to address that question,” Jean-Pierre added, per Daily Mail.
