The Trump campaign has vowed to take legal action against the makers of “The Apprentice,” a film about Donald Trump’s rise in the 1980s that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday. The campaign called the movie “pure fiction” and accused the filmmakers of sensationalizing debunked lies.
“This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked,” Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement. He added that the campaign will file a lawsuit “to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers.”
Directed by Ali Abbasi, “The Apprentice” stars Sebastian Stan as Trump and examines his relationship with defense attorney Roy Cohn, played by Jeremy Strong. The film portrays Trump’s early dealings with Cohn as a Faustian bargain that guided his rise as a businessman and politician.
One controversial scene in the movie depicts Trump allegedly raping his then-wife Ivana Trump, played by Maria Bakalova. While Ivana Trump stated in her 1990 divorce deposition that Trump raped her, she later said she didn’t mean it literally and Trump denied the allegation.
