Panama has a new president and it would appear that he thinks more like Donald Trump than Joe Biden.
President-elect Jose Raul Mulino has vowed to shut down one of the largest pipelines for illegal immigrants to come to this country.
Over the last year alone, more than 500,000 migrants have used this route.
Shut It Down
Mulino made it very clear that as soon as he takes office, he will go to work to shut this down.
He stated, “Panama and our Darien [Gap] are not a transit route. It is our border.”
Mulino believes his plan will deter not only migrants but also make this option less attractive to the cartels.
He stated, “Because when we start to deport people here in an immediate deportation plan, the interest for sneaking through Panama will decrease.
“I assure you they are going to say that going through Panama is not attractive because they are deporting you.”
This will all be music to Donald Trump’s ears, as he hammered foreign leaders when he was president to take actions such as this.
Instead, most balked knowing that Joe Biden was coming into office and he was going to open the borders to millions of migrants every year.
Talk is one thing, however, and being able to pull off such a plan is another thing entirely.
Some are already questioning if Mulino was just saying this for support or if he can really pull it off.
For instance, analyst Adam Isacson of the nongovernmental organization Washington Office on Latin America, does not believe that Panama has the resources to pull this off.
He stated, “A daily plane, which would be extremely expensive, would only repatriate around 10% of the flow (about 1,000 to 1,200 per day). The United States only manages to do about 130 flights monthly in the entire world.”
For our sake, I hope Mulino delivers because the immigration numbers under this administration, as you well know, are sickening.
