Travis Kelce has broken his silence and defended his Kansas City Chiefs teammate Harrison Butker after his controversial recent speech where he told female graduates that one of their most important roles in life will be ‘homemaker’.
Butker sparked widespread outrage with a 20-minute speech at Benedictine College, Kansas, where he directly addressed female graduates and told them to be excited for the ‘vocation’ of being a homemaker, using his wife Isabelle as an example.
Now, speaking on the latest episode of New Heights, Kelce – who was recording the show from Europe, where he is joining girlfriend Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour – stood up for his teammate against the cancel culture backlash, even though he disagreed with it almost entirely.
“I’ve known him for even plus years. I cherish him as a teammate. I think Pat (Mahomes – the Chiefs quarterback) said it best where he is every bit of a great person and a great teammate,” he said.
“He’s treated family and family that I’ve introduced to him with nothing but respect and kindness. And that’s how he treats everyone.
“When it comes down to his views and what he said at the Saint Benedict’s commencement speech, those are his. I can’t say I agree with the majority of it or just about any of it outside of just him loving his family and his kids. And I don’t think that I should judge him by his views, especially his religious views, of how to go about life, that’s just not who I am.”
