A young Texan boy, 9, narrowly escaped tragedy when bullets from a drive-by shooting shattered through his apartment window.
The incident, captured in harrowing security camera footage, happened around 7:30 pm.
It portrays the chilling moment when 9-year-old Errol Hill climbs onto his living room couch just as the chaos unfolds.
A cloud of dust and smoke engulfs the room, prompting the terrified child to instinctively seek refuge behind what appears to be a washing machine.
“It came through the wall,” recounted the visibly shaken but thankfully unharmed youngster to NBC 5.
“I thought it was just fireworks, but when I heard the screams, I looked outside.”
Six individuals, four of whom were children, sustained injuries during the shooting incident that took place on May 1 at the Miramar apartment complex in Fort Worth.
Local reports indicate that the victims’ ages ranged from 3 to 19.
Errol reacted swiftly as bullets flew past his head, taking cover before rushing to alert his mother, Mary Jane Gonzales, who was in the adjacent room, NBC 5 reported.
Gonzales, a medical assistant by profession, responded quickly to the distress calls echoing from her neighbors downstairs in the aftermath of discovering her son and two other children safe.
The mother’s primary aim was to offer assistance as she rushed outside.
What she encountered was a scene of chaos, where the grim reality unfolded before her eyes: six individuals had fallen victim to gunfire.
Gonzales sprang into action without hesitation, the outlet reported, endeavoring to stem the blood flow from multiple wounds.
Among the injured was a 3-year-old child, whose condition was particularly severe.
Subsequent medical intervention revealed that the child had to undergo kidney removal due to the extent of her injuries.
Gonzales recounted the emotional toll the incident took on her when reflecting on the harrowing experience, especially when witnessing the young child’s struggle with consciousness.
“That one was really hard for me,” she shared. Gonzales soon revealed how the incident has left an indelible mark on her and her family.
The apartment they’ve called home for the past four years, their once safe haven, now serves as a constant reminder of the trauma they endured.
“It forever changed our life. We are traumatized,” she affirmed. “I’ve never seen anyone get shot, let alone a child.”
NBC 5 reported Fort Worth Police disclosed in a statement that “one of the six victims declined medical treatment for their minor injury at the scene.” However, the condition of the toddler and the other four individuals transported to area hospitals remains uncertain at this time.
No arrests have been declared in connection with the incident as of now.
Police confirmed, however, that the gunman opened fire when traveling in a southbound vehicle on Las Vegas Trail.
Fort Worth police stated that the gunman’s vehicle passed by the apartment building before the shooting, and at least one person from the vehicle shot towards all the victims.
“All you hear is shooting, and I got on the floor,” a man named Octavius Tucker said of the shooting. “I came outside and everybody out here crying. It’s messed up how it happened.”
“I come outside, the little girl is out here,” Tucker said. “The daddy going through it, too ‘cause his daughter just lost a kidney,” he added.
