A Georgia police officer allegedly shot and killed the Lyft driver who was taking him home because he thought the victim was trying to kidnap him and recruit him into a “gay fraternity.”
Fulton County Jail records show Koby Minor is facing murder and aggravated assault charges. Minor, an Atlanta police officer since 2018, resigned from the department following his arrest, the agency said in a statement.
WSB-TV obtained an arrest affidavit that said Minor was at a fellow cop’s house and hailed a Lyft ride shortly after midnight on Wednesday. Minor hopped in the back seat of driver Reginald Folks’ car, and they started driving down State Road 14. The now ex-cop said Folks began speaking on the phone through the car’s Bluetooth radio in a foreign language when Minor thought he heard another voice, the affidavit reportedly said.
Minor asked to be let out of the car, but Folks allegedly kept driving. When he tried to open the door, it would not open. After Folks reached into the back seat, Minor allegedly fired his gun three times, hitting the driver in the head. Minor broke a window and got out of the car, the affidavit reportedly said.
A witness said Minor waved her down for help and told her he believed his driver was trying to kidnap him because he was “in a gay fraternity and was trying to recruit” him.
Local Fox affiliate WAGA reported Minor surrendered to Union City police officers when they arrived. Medical personnel pronounced Folks, 35, dead on the scene.
Minor was already on leave following a December 2023 arrest for reportedly crashing his car with 20 unprescribed Xanax pills in his bag. APD said it had been in possession of his agency handgun since then.
Folks’ mother, Marchelle Folks, told NBC affiliate WXIA that her son moved to Atlanta about 12 years ago and had recently taken up professional wrestling. She said her family is heartbroken.
“[I’m] very proud of the man he became. Everywhere I went, people met him and enjoyed him. He always ran into people that he knew,” she said. “He was a friendly guy, very social. Reggie was pretty much the life of the party.”
Lyft also released a statement about the incident.
“Our hearts are with Mr. Folks’ loved ones as they confront this unspeakable tragedy, and we have reached out to offer our support during this difficult time. We stand ready to assist law enforcement with any investigation and have permanently banned the rider’s account from the Lyft community.”
