CNN data reporter Harry Enten broke down President Joe Biden’s polling struggles with black voters particularly among those under 50 in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election. Enten analyzed recent polls showing Biden underperforming compared to his 2020 numbers.
In a New York Times/Siena College poll Biden trailed former President Donald Trump in five out of six swing states. Trump received 18% support from likely black voters compared to 70% for Biden in a head-to-head matchup.
Enten noted that in an average of polls, Biden still leads Trump among black voters 69% to 22%. However, Trump’s support has more than doubled from just 9% at this point four years ago.
“If this held through the general election, obviously we’re still months away, this would be by far the best performance for a Republican candidate among black voters in a generation two generations,” Enten said on “CNN News Central.”
Enten delved into the age breakdown, revealing that while Biden maintains a substantial lead among black voters 50 and older his advantage shrinks to just under 40 percentage points among those under 50. “This is historic. This is what a lot of folks have been talking about that Joe Biden has a specific problem among younger black voters,” he added.
The analysis highlights the challenges Biden faces in shoring up support among a crucial Democratic voting bloc as he seeks re-election in 2024.
