This will be a lot of fun, though it might make you hate Pelosi more than you currently do. The protagonist here is Winston Marshall, who you might know as the former banjo player for the rock group Mumford and Sons. Marshall is a very good example of somebody who got canceled, as he was essentially thrown out of Mumford and Sons because he wasn’t woke enough for the snowflake sensibilities of the other members.
The thing about getting canceled, though, is that it frees you up to say whatever the hell you please.
And it turns out that Winston Marshall is fairly well-read and quite articulate. So much so that when he was invited to argue at the Oxford Union on behalf of the opposition to a proposition condemning populism as a “threat to democracy,” he acquitted himself awfully well.
The proponents of that absurd elitist idea – you’ll note that this is one time the elites aren’t using the term “our democracy” to describe what’s under threat from populism – brought in Nancy Pelosi as a ringer to argue for canceling the populists. Which she did.
And the things she said were all the things you’d expect.
Then came the banjo player, and Marshall wiped the floor with her. To such an extent that she couldn’t help herself and began heckling him with nonsense – not once but twice.
And that, of course, was an admission she had lost the argument.
Here’s the video, with a little more commentary to follow…
Nancy Pelosi shouts out & interrupts not once, but twice, as Mr. Winston Marshall made his case for the threat of the Elites vs. the People at Oxford.
I wish we had more formal debates like this in the United States.pic.twitter.com/XWAYoyHhUN

Of course, we don’t have debates like this in America. We have cable news food-fights which last a few minutes between spates of commercials for cell phones, junk food and Ozempic, and so lots of topics get very poor coverage compared to what Marshall did to Pelosi. When the closest thing you can get to this is Bill Maher’s show, with the painfully stupid takes offered up by half his panelists, you know the state of your discourse isn’t good.
That’s for a reason, obviously, and not just because the public has been conditioned into a short attention span.
The people who control our cultural and media institutions don’t want to open space for the Winston Marshalls of the world to question our elites. They want to set the narratives.
And “our democracy,” which is always under threat, is a classic example of this.
What is “our democracy,” anyway? Democracy, reasonably understood, is whatever the majority wants to make of it. That’s one reason why America is not a democracy but instead a constitutional republic, so that we’re a nation of laws and our society has guardrails to ward off the ugly excesses of mob rule.
But “our democracy” seems to be an alternative, if not the antithesis, to that constitutional republic. Interestingly enough, it isn’t what the majority would make of it at all. The majority doesn’t choose transgenderism, and the majority doesn’t choose DEI or ESG. Nor does the majority choose the corporate oligopoly our economy has become, or the ugly collusion between big government and Big Tech which has resulted in censorship of true information about COVID-19 and lots of other subjects.
In fact, nobody really wants any of that.
Nobody except our elites, who long ago chose the pursuit of power over the pursuit of merit.
Marshall says a society does need elites, and he’s correct – and not alone. Maher said the same thing on his latest broadcast. What Marshall says without saying it is that the elites have to be worthy of their status and they have to work for the people and not against us.
And we haven’t had that in a while.
The purpose of an elite class – and this is true going all the way back to the Sumerians of ancient times – is to enforce and represent the best customs, cultures, habits, and ideas of a society. Your elites are supposed to uphold your customs, cultures, habits, and ideas. But when you have a decadent and corrupt civilization, one which is declining, one telltale sign is that those elites no longer uphold your customs, cultures, habits, and ideas but instead pervert and trash them.
I use the terms customs, cultures, habits, and ideas because those were the “Four Olds” that Mao Zedong declared war on during the Chinese Cultural Revolution in the late 1960’s. Our elites have largely adopted the Chinese Cultural Revolution as a model for reshaping American society along radical lines, and that’s why a custom like chivalrous conduct by males toward females is now reviled as “toxic” or the ideas of the Enlightenment are disparaged as products of the “white patriarchy.”
Because “our Democracy,” in which Ukraine’s border is more important than ours, in which speech by one side of the political aisle is “violence” and the violence of the other side is “speech,” and in which exporting manufacturing jobs and importing welfare recipients are policy sacraments you’re a “bigot” or “racist” for questioning, is not the traditional concept most Americans have of what democracy is.
The elites don’t care and aren’t interested in discussing it. That’s why when Marshall makes the obvious point that the January 6 protest which got out of hand, quite possibly because it was designed to be sidetracked into a riot by the agents provocateur seeded into the crowd, was a nothingburger in comparison to the chaos unleashed onto the streets of dozens of American cities in June 2020 after George Floyd’s death from a fentanyl overdose while in the custody of the Minneapolis police, Pelosi can’t allow the point. She proceeds to interrupt him and claim they’re completely different things.
She makes the absurd point that January 6 was an “insurrection” aimed at destroying our government. But the Floyd riots included the firebombing of federal courthouses and the declaration of an “autonomous zone” akin to the Paris Commune in Seattle and a few other places, and those weren’t “insurrections.”
Because in “our democracy” such equivalences can’t be made. If they are, it’s an example of the people enforcing one of the Olds – specifically the idea of objective truth, that politically-motivated violence in the streets is dangerous and can’t be allowed regardless of where it comes from – losing ground to the ordinary folks attempting to preserve them.
And Pelosi is prepared to fight an awful lot harder than ordinary folks are in an effort to preserve the power she and her elite friends have over us.
But that doesn’t mean the facts are on her side. As Marshall illustrates very well, the opposite is true.
