Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is not backing down from her criticism of House Speaker Mike Johnson even after falling short in her bid to oust him last week. Speaking with Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures” the Georgia congresswoman accused Johnson of being “owned by the Democrats” noting that it was Democratic support that shielded him from the fate of his predecessor Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) who was removed from the speakership last year.
“When I called the motion to vacate it wasn’t Republicans that saved Mike Johnson it was Democrats that saved Mike Johnson” Greene said. She pointed to the votes of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) key players in the Trump impeachment efforts as evidence that “tells the American people everything that they need to know” about where Johnson’s true loyalties lie.

Greene also slammed Johnson for refusing to cut off funding for Special Counsel Jack Smith’s Trump investigations another point of contention. “Mike Johnson is owned by the Democrats and refuses to protect President Trump even though he runs down to Mar-a-Lago every chance he gets and hugs him as tightly as possible” she said implying Johnson’s embrace of Trump is disingenuous.
The outspoken conservative further criticized Johnson’s concessions to Democrats on matters like Ukraine aid. His compromising stance has won him accolades from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) whom Johnson praised as “a good man” during a recent podcast interview.
“Last week the Democrats proved me right when they voted to save Mike Johnson as the Uniparty Speaker” Greene posted on X. “The Americans who gave us a majority want a GOP who will FIGHT to stop the Democrats’ radical agenda including Biden’s weaponized DOJ against President Trump.”
She continued “Mike Johnson refuses to do that and just keeps handing over everything the Democrats want. When Nancy Pelosi supports a ‘Republican’ Speaker something is very wrong.”
Ex-Speaker McCarthy also took a swipe at his successor for depending on Democratic votes to keep his job. “If you can’t sustain being speaker by your own majority should you sustain it? No” he remarked. The ongoing friction between Johnson and the hard-right faction of his caucus highlights the difficulties of managing a narrow and divided House Republican majority.
