“Yellowstone” is one of the biggest TV hits of the last decade.
The critically acclaimed show was supposed to wrap its run.
But now Kevin Costner gave this shocking update on “Yellowstone’s” future.
Costner stars as John Dutton III, who, in the “Yellowstone” universe, owns and operates the Dutton Ranch, the largest contiguous ranch in the United States.
The series revolves around Costner’s Dutton and the rest of the Dutton clan dealing with challenges to their control over the land.
At the end of the first part of season five, Costner’s Dutton got elected governor of Montana.
But as the second half of season five marks the final episodes of “Yellowstone,” it’s unclear if Costner will appear in the series’ conclusion.
Costner entered into a lengthy – and public – dispute with Paramount Network and series creator Taylor Sheridan over “Yellowstone’s” filming schedule.
Paramount said Costner wanted a reduced schedule for season five as he filmed his two-part Western epic “Horizon: An American Saga,”which is set to hit theaters this summer.
In an interview with “Entertainment Tonight,”Costner – for the first time – cracked the door open to appearing in the second half of season five, saying he originally believed the series was set for a seven-season run.
“I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to… I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”
In the past, Costner has alluded to the fact that his dispute with Sheridan and Paramount boiled down to cash and creative.
In his divorce proceedings Costner said of his negotiations that “we tried to negotiate, they offered me less money than previous seasons [and] there were issues with the creative.”
Costner also wanted input on how to wrap up Dutton’s character arc.
“[Dutton] needs to be proactive in what happens and I’ve kind of had my own fantasy how [the character’s final arc] might be,” Costner stated. “But that’s Taylor’s thing. I said as much to him a while back. I had thoughts how it could happen, but we just have to see.”
But Sheridan – like all showrunners – didn’t give creative license to his actor to shape the character’s narrative.
That’s because actors view everything through the lens of what best would serve their character while showrunners need to take a 30,000-foot view and determine what’s in the best interest of the overall story they are trying to tell.
Due to last year’s actors’ and writers’ strikes, it’s believed that the final season of “Yellowstone” will premiere in November.
But will it include the series’ star?
