Apple has lost its position as the world’s top phonemaker to Samsung in the first quarter of 2024 as its shipments have dropped around 10%, a report says.
From January to March, Samsung captured a 20.8% market share, followed by Apple with 17.3% and China-based Xiaomi with 14.1%, Reuters reported, citing data from research firm IDC.
Samsung, which recently released the Galaxy S24 series phones, shipped more than 60 million devices during the first quarter, Reuters added.
According to the news agency, the IDC reported that Apple shipped 50.1 million iPhones, a decrease from the 55.4 million units shipped in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The report also noted a 7.8% rise in global smartphone shipments to 289.4 million units in the first quarter of 2024. Additionally, it highlighted a 2.1% decline in Apple phone shipments in China in the final quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year.
During a Galaxy S24 launch event in January, Samsung’s artificial intelligence technology, known as Galaxy AI, took center stage. Samsung unveiled its plans to usher in a “new era of mobile AI.” This technology, deployed in tools like Live Translate for verbal or written communication and Interpreter for in-person discussions, enhances the functionality of the phones. Additionally, the AI on the new smartphones can assist with message tone, create summaries of notes, and transcribe voice recordings into text, as per Samsung.
